Finch helped Memphis State make the NCAA championship game his senior year, but the team lost to UCLA. Finch was then drafted by the Lakers in 1973 but decided to stay home and play for the American Basketball Association's Memphis Tams. After two years of playing semi-professionally, Finch returned to the sidelines as a coach and would eventually become the head coach of Memphis State. Finch was championed as a symbol of the racial healing power of basketball that helped counteract the racial turbulence ongoing in the city, but for decades the city's racial strife continued off the basketball court"--

This edited collection conceptualizes professional basketball not just as a sport but as an historically, culturally, and economically embedded entity. The chapters analyse the fact that the sport of basketball contains alternative logics that can easily clash, and by treating professional basketball as the negotiation place of these multiple demands, ideas, and logics, the editors have identified three areas in which these clashes manifest: the realization of the game; the cultural impact of professional basketball and the global outreach of professional basketball. The book is explanatory and qualitative, offering new perspectives and touching on topics including gender, diversity, racism, and minority experiences within professional basketball. As such it will be of interest to sport sociologists, as well as those researching the history of sport, sports marketing and cultural studies.
This book examines Memphis's symbolic meaning and value as a Negro leagues baseball city during Jim Crow. It locates the main intersections between black professional baseball and the South in the four decades that spanned the modern Negro leagues era and analyzes the racial dynamics in the city through the lens of the Memphis Red Sox, a black-owned and operated organization that stood as a pillar of success. Baseball also provides a way to examine the racial inequalities and issues that pervaded the city in those years. A black-owned stadium served as a forum for political assertion and an arena for real political struggle for blacks in Memphis.
