This working paper sheds light on the impact of radio programs on the climate change knowledge of local populations in the Congo Basin. We provide an assessment of the change in knowledge of a rural village in the Congo Basin after inhabitants listened to one of the radio programs that were prepared on climate change. The document also provides potential indicators for result up-scaling. After applying a micro-economic model to a casecontrol experiment, both before and after exposure to one radio program, the results show an increase in knowledge of 22.3% attributable to the radio program. In addition, a series of reactions were recorded from different end users, such as other media, ministries, NGO representatives and researchers, who reacted positively to the broadcasts. We recommend the use of radio programs to increase knowledge and induce behavioral changes with regard to climate change adaptation and mitigation
The monograph studies the key aspects of land law of African countries, customary land tenure laws, customary rights to water, forest, cattle grazing; the influence of colonial epoch on customary land tenure systems, and the rights of African women to land. Characteristic features of land and water rights under Islamic law are provided. The current state of formal land law in the countries of North, West, Central, and East Africa is analyzed, including the following: the right of ownership to land and other natural resources, types of various rights to land and natural resources, and the relationship of formal law and customary land tenure systems. For students, graduate students and teachers of law schools, employees of legislative, executive and judicial authorities, as well as for all those interested in land, civil law and comparative legal studies.
The countries in the Congo Basin are poor and vulnerable and, as such, suffer from the negative effects of climate change. Fighting this phenomenon has become an item on countries policy agendas. Processes, based on mitigation and adaptation measures, have been launched at various levels and places in these countries to cope with the dynamics of a changing climate. But to study and implement mitigation and adaptation measures simultaneously is not enough. In a situation characterized by poverty and resource shortages especially financial resources and to support a process that is already exceptionally slow, it is important to go further and consider the synergy between mitigation and adaptation. The principle described in this analysis is combined with thoughts on the best way to proceed, a way to encourage more thorough analyses and ensure ex situ integration and coherence between climate and development policies, and in situ integration and coherence within the climate policies, the objective being to deliver both ecological and policy synergy outcomes.
