This soldier’s WWI account of trench warfare is “a masterpiece among the chronicles of war” (The Australian). Written just after the heat of the battle, this is the personal account of an ordinary soldier’s experience of one of the most horrific series of battles ever fought—Fleurbaix, Bapaume, Beaumetz, Lagnicourt, Bullecourt, the Menin Road, Villers-Bretonneux, Péronne, and Mont Saint-Quentin. W. H. Downing, who was a law student in Melbourne before fighting on the Western Front and earning the Military Medal, describes not only the mud, the rats, the constant pounding of the guns, the deaths, and the futility, but also the humor and the heroism of one of the most compelling periods in world history. His writing is spare but vivid, and presents a graphic description of an ordinary person’s struggle to survive.
The Cross of Sacrifice: Officers Who Died in the Service of British, Indian and East African Regiments and Corps, 1914-1919
A tremendous piece of research, conducted over ten years, in which are listed, in alphabetical order, the names of over 60,000 officers of the British Empire who died during the Great War, including nurses and female aid workers. Based on the CWGC Registers, the information provided includes not only that shown in ‘Officers Died' but also the place of burial or commemoration. The alphabetical listing means that looking up a name does not require prior knowledge of the regiment (as in ‘Officers Died') though this information is given, as well as cross-reference to the relevant page number in ‘Officers Died’.
The Lion and the Rose
The Lion and the Rose tells the story of an infantry battalion in the Great War. Based on many unpublished sources, the book narrates the individual parts played by nearly 2,000 of those who served with the 4th King’s Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment from the day that war was declared in 1914 until the armistice in 1918 and in a few cases, the stories of men whose war continued long afterwards. The battalion first saw action in Festubert in May 1915 and went on to fight on the Somme, the Ypres Salient and Gillemont Farm, though the battalion’s epic stand at Givenchy on 9 April 1918 must rate as one of the greatest defensive actions of the war. Using contemporary combat reports, many of the major actions are described down to individual platoon level. The Lion and the Rose does not just concentrate on the major battles, but also examines everyday life in the trenches. Appendices give the most complete battalion roll to date and list those awarded medals for their bravery and also those nominated unsuccessfully for recognition. This list is set out in two sections: The Royal Navy with the Navies of the Empire and the Royal Marines; and The Royal Naval Air Service, Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force. As with the other volumes in the series date and place of death are given with place of burial or commemoration. This volume breaks new ground by recording the deaths and burial sites of other ranks, and extending the date of research to 1921. The title is not exactly right since it makes no mention of Warrant Officers who are included in the lists.
