Life at Interfaces and Under Extreme Conditions

Interfaces between media, whether air-water or sediment-water interfaces or organisms themselves, pose considerable problems to marine organisms attempting to live at these boundaries. In the present volume, a number of authors address various aspects of these two topics. Locations under scrutiny range from intertidal areas to the deep sea, while both macro-and meiofaunal organisms are investigated. Distribution patterns and effects of variable temperatures, pressures, and salinities are analysed. Aspects of fouling induction and prevention are also addressed. This book is intended as a progress report from the 33rd European Marine Biology Symposium held in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, in September 1998.

A Global Overview of the Conservation of Freshwater Decapod Crustaceans

This book introduces updated information on conservation issues, providing an overview of what is needed to advance the global conservation of freshwater decapods such as freshwater crabs, crayfish, and shrimps. Biodiversity loss in general is highest in organisms that depend on intact freshwater habitats, because freshwater ecosystems worldwide are suffering intense threats from multiple sources. Our understanding of the number and location of threatened species of decapods, and of the nature of their extinction threats has improved greatly in recent years, and has enabled the development of species conservation strategies. This volume focuses on saving threatened species from extinction, and emphasizes the importance of the successful implementation of conservation action plans through cooperation between scientists, conservationists, educators, funding agencies, policy makers, and conservation agencies.

We are all aware that artificial intelligence (AI) has brought a change in our lives, driven by a new form of interaction between man and machine. We are in the era of the fourth Industrial Revolution (IR) where AI plays vital roles in human development by enabling extraordinary technological advances making fundamental changes to the way we live, work and relate to one another. It is an opportunity to help everyone, including leaders, policymakers and people from all income groups and nations, to harness converging technologies in order to create an inclusive, human-centered future. We need to prepare our graduates as well as researchers to conduct their research with 4.0 IR-related technol...

Neohelice granulata, a Model Species for Studies on Crustaceans, Volume II

This book condenses more than three decades’ worth of research and published information about the crab Neohelice granulata. It also serves as a reference book for any researcher studying the biology of crustaceans, and even a reference for other disciplines in which the species serves as a representative model. The study will also be useful to undergraduate and postgraduate students seeking to improve their knowledge of crustacean biology. The topics covered by this second volume include neuroanatomy; visual system; memory and reflexes; anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system; metabolism and digestion; claw muscles; gas and ionic exchange; and endocrine disruption.

It also serves as a reference book for any researcher studying the biology of crustaceans, and even a reference for other disciplines in which the species serves as a representative model. The study will also be useful to undergraduate and postgraduate students seeking to improve their knowledge of crustacean biology. The topics covered by this first volume include embryonic and larval development and ecology; sexual maturity, mating and fecundity; population dynamic; inter-specific and trophic relationships; parasitism and symbiosis; feeding ecology; and the ecological role of Neohelice granulata in the ecosystem.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

"Much of the biological and other research efforts on crustaceans have been driven by their importance to humans as a food source. Production comes from a diverse array of methods and scales of extraction, from small recreational or subsistence fisheries to industrial scale operations. Most crustacean catch comes from shrimp fisheries with over two million tonnes taken in 2014, mainly by trawl. The genera Acetes, Fenneropenaeus, and Pandalus account for around three quarters of this catch. Crab, krill and lobster are the other main crustacean products (around 600,000 t crab, 380,000 t krill and 300,000 t lobster in 2014). Trends in crustacean fisheries are broadly similar to those of other s...
