Cardio-Physiology Challenging Empirical Philosophy
With this volume of three essays, the authors want to create an opportunity for dialogue between different disciplines by taking a closer look at three cardio-physiological examples. In the essays presented, we will look at the exploration of different cardiological topics from the 20th century, all of which have contributed to a better understanding of certain aspects of cardiac activity. Not only do these insights provide a more complete picture of these cardiac phenomena, but it is also within this context that we can look for and into the patterns of regularities which govern this living organism. Our goal is to stimulate a dialogue on the philosophy of science in the spirit of Hans Reichenbach.

Measures of Spirituality/Religiosity—Description of Concepts and Validation of Instruments
Why do we need more questionnaires to measure aspects of spirituality/religiosity when we already have so many well-tried instruments in use? One answer is that research in this field is growing and that new research questions continuously do arise. Several of these new questions cannot be easily answered with the instruments designed for previous questions. The field is expanding and, consequently, the research topics. Meanwhile several multidimensional instruments were developed which cover existential, prosocial, religious and non-religious forms of spirituality, hope, peace and trust—and several more. The ‘disadvantage’ of these instruments is the fact that some are conceptually broad and often rather unspecific, but they might be suited quite well for culturally and spiritually diverse populations when the intention is to compare such diverse groups. This is the reason why more research on new instruments is needed as can be found in this Special Issue, and to stimulate a critical debate about their pros and cons.

Home Grown Initiatives and Nation Building in Africa
The book describes a number of Rwandan post-genocide initiatives aiming at developing a common sense of identity in the population and addressing social, cultural and economic issues. This proactive approach indicates the will of the Rwandan government with the cooperation of social actors to resort to traditional - and in some cases precolonial - cultural practices to resolve the problems of nation-building. The essays are well documented; many of them based on empirical studies.
Spiritual Needs in Research and Practice
Based on information gathered from the internationally used Spiritual Needs Questionnaire, this book offers analyses of the spiritual and existential needs among different groups of people such as the chronically ill, elderly, adolescents, mothers of sick children, refugees, patients' relatives, and others. The theoretical background, specific empirical findings and the relevance of addressing spiritual needs is discussed by experts from different professions and cultural contexts. Supporting a person's spiritual needs remains an important task of future healthcare systems that wish to more comprehensively care for the healthcare needs of patients, and of religious communities to ensure that spiritual concerns of all persons, independent of their religious orientations, are met in and outside healthcare settings.
Remembering the Dead
Remembering the dead is a topic which connects various cultures and traditions. The reception of the African tradition of ancestorship is a theological enrichment in the ecumenical discussions all over the world. In our time, the exchange of gifts plays a great role in promoting unity of the Churches. Especially the concepts of African theology with the incomparable special position of Jesus Christ as "proto ancestor" are important for the interconfessional dialogues. The veneration of the ancestors in Africa can be a help to begin ecumenical discussions in this regional context on the question of the veneration of the saints. According to African tradition the ancestors also have influence on the process of purification. Therefore, the veneration of the ancestors contributes to providing answers to the ecumenical controversies about the understanding of the eschatological purification. Sentus Francis Dikwe SDS, born in 1980 in Morogoro, Tanzania, ordained priest of the Salvatorian Congregation. He attained doctorate in theology 2020 in Munster, Germany.
Overcoming Violence
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda and coinciding with the intensification of violent attacks on the civilian population in the East Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo scholars and students from Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenia, Cameroon, South Africa, Germany, Austria, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Switzerland joined together in Rwanda to discuss the topic "Overcoming violence".
