Gravel-bed Rivers in the Environment

"Read what over 60 internationally recognized authors say about fluvial processes, the environment, and management of gravel-bed rivers. Learn about efforts to restore more-natural ecosystem functions to adversely impacted rivers. And for some mind-stretching, consider the hydraulic/geomorphic implications of cataclysmic floods on Earth and Mars. Beginning in 1980 and held at five-year intervals, these workshops have brought together leading international researchers to present and discuss new results, concepts and state-of-the-art methods to analyze fluvial processes in and manage gravel-bed rivers. The fourth workshop was held at Gold Bar, Washington, near the dynamic Skykomish River and s...

Phase Transitions in Surface Films 2

The Advanced Study Institute (AS I) entitled "Phase Transitions in Surface Films" was held at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily from June 19 to June 29, 1990. It reviewed the present understanding (experimental and theoretical) of phase transitions of surfaces, interfaces, and thin ftlms as well as the related structural and dynamical properties of these systems. From its inception, this ASI was envisioned as a sequel to one of the same title organized eleven years earlier by J. G. Dash and J. Ruvalds which was also held at the Ettore Majorana Centre. The previous ASI reflected the progress which had been made in understanding quasi two-dimensional (2D) state...

Surface Diffusion

The interest in the problem of surface diffusion has been steadily growing over the last fifteen years. This is clearly evident from the increase in the number of papers dealing with the problem, the development of new experimental techniques, and the specialized sessions focusing on diffusion in national and international meetings. Part of the driving force behind this increasing activity is our recently acquired ability to observe and possibly control atomic scale phenomena. It is now possible to look selectively at individual atomistic processes and to determine their relative importance during growth and reactions at surfaces. The number of researchers interested in this problem also has...

Self-Organized Arrays of Gold Nanoparticles

This thesis addresses the fabrication and investigation of the optical response of gold nanoparticle arrays supported on insulating LiF(110) nanopatterned substrates. Motivated by the discovery of the intriguing effects that arise when electromagnetic radiation interacts with metallic nanostructures, the thesis focuses on the application of bottom-up approaches to the fabrication of extended-area plasmonic nanostructures, and the optimization of their optical response. By developing a sophisticated effective-medium model and comparing the experimental findings with model calculations, the author explores the role of the interparticle electromagnetic coupling and array dimensionality on the collective plasmonic behavior of the array, giving insights into the physical mechanisms governing the optical response.

International Law Reports

  • Categories: Law

Volume 116 reports the 1997 "Danube dam" case concerning the Gabcikovo-Nagymaros Project (Hungary/Slovakia). Also included is the hitherto unreported decision of the English High Court on act of State and the effect of Security Council resolutions in the latest phase of Kuwait Airways Corp. v. Iraqi Airways Co. Several important decisions of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on State responsibility for human rights actions are reported. Finally, there is a group of newly translated cases on State immunity and international organization immunity from Austria, France, Portugal and Switzerland.

Nanoscience And Technology: A Collection Of Reviews From Nature Journals

This book contains 35 review articles on nanoscience and nanotechnology that were first published in Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Materials and a number of other Nature journals. The articles are all written by leading authorities in their field and cover a wide range of areas in nanoscience and technology, from basic research (such as single-molecule devices and new materials) through to applications (in, for example, nanomedicine and data storage).

Alternative Lithography

Good old Gutenberg could not have imagined that his revolutionary printing concept which so greatly contributed to dissemination of knowledge and thus today 's wealth, would have been a source of inspiration five hundred years later. Now, it seems intuitive that a simple way to produce a large number of replicates is using a mold to emboss pattern you need, but at the nanoscale nothing is simple: the devil is in the detail. And this book is about the "devil". In the following 17 chapters, the authors-all of them well recognized and active actors in this emerging field-describe the state-of-the-art, today 's technological bottlenecks and the prospects for micro-contact printing and nanoimprin...

The objective in initiating this series in 1980 was to provide an in-depth review of advances made in the understanding key aspects of surface chemistry and physics through the application of new techniques to the study of well-defined surfaces. Since then the field of surface science has greatly matured, and further important techniques, particularly scanning probe microscopies, have been successfully assimilated into the applications armoury of the surface scientist. The present volume is a series of timely reviews by many of the current experts in the field of phase transitions and adsorbate-induced surface restructuring. No aspect of the science of solid surfaces can be fully understood ...
