The contents of the book are based upon the materials collected through extensive and careful research, for the preparation of a thesis for a higher degree for the Lancaster University. It deals with the conception of Hindu religion, its history and progress along with the gradual rationalization of the belief and practices with the time, since Rigveda and its effect on the caste system. Special attempt has been made to present many complex theological topics, in a simpler way for the easy understanding of the young generation, on whom the religion depends enormously, for its future growth and expansion. The vast amount of information has been accumulated here in a concise form to make it a useful reference book for the students of religious studies and sociology.

In The Brahmo Samaj and its Vaiṣṇava Milieus: Intersections of Hindu Knowledge and Love in Nineteenth Century Bengal, Ankur Barua offers an intellectual history of the motif of religious universalism in the writings of some intellectuals associated with the Brahmo Samaj (founded in 1828). They constructed Hindu worldviews that were simultaneously rooted in some ancient Sanskritic materials and orientated towards contemporary universalist visions with western hues. These constructions were shaped by their dialectical engagements with three groups: members of the Bengali middle classes with sceptical standpoints (‘Young Bengal’), Christian missionaries, and Hindu Vaiṣṇava thinkers. In this genealogy of religious universalisms, Barua indicates how certain post-1900 formulations of the universalist compass of Hinduism were being enunciated across Brahmo circles from the 1820s.

Sri Ramakrishna on Himself

Streams of multi-branched sadhanas found an appropriate confluence in Sri Ramakrishna and the extent and depth of his spiritual realizations beggar description. The ablest biographer may find it difficult to comprehend the evolution of the Master’s inmost self and episodes of his divine transformation. Therefore the story of his unique life is best told by himself. This book published by Advaita Ashrama (Publication House of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, India) is an attempt to form an autobiography of Sri Ramakrishna from his utterances about his life.
