Family networks and wider personal social relationships - guanxi - have long been held to be a significant factor making for the success of many Chinese family businesses, and guanxi is often seen as a special characteristic which shapes the nature of all business in China. This book re-examines this proposition critically, bringing together the very latest research and comparing the situation in different parts of "Greater China" – mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. It considers entrepreneurship, venture capital, intergenerational succession, disputes, family businesses in different sectors of the economy, and particular family businesses. Among the book’s many interesting conclusions is the observation that guanxi capitalism has evolved in different ways in the different parts of Greater China, with the particular institutional setting having a major impact.

The Dust That Never Settles provides a historical review of the Taiwan independence movement in the framework of the economic, social, and cultural relations between the United States and China. Mei-ling T. Wang provides a detailed account of the movement, beginning in 1624 with the Dutch rule of Taiwan, through 1997. He emphasizes the complexity of the relationship between the United States and China, and he recognizes that the most intriguing aspect of the relations between them is the issue of the independence of Taiwan. Wang analyzes historical events of the past 300 years in order to provide insight into the nature of the development of the situation that plagues U.S. foreign policy, using political economy and cross-cultural discourse in the framework of eighteenth century imperialism, the Cold War, and superpower politics. This knowledge will allow foreign policy practitioners to understand the problems of the United States-China relationship and lead to more effective solutions.
The Shih-shuo hsin-yu, conventionally translated as A New Account of Tales of the World, is one of the most significant works in the entire Chinese literary tradition. It established a genre (the Shih-shuo t'i) and inspired dozens of imitations from the later part of the Tang dynasty (618-907) to the early Republican era of the 20th century. The Shih-shuo hsin-yu consists of more than a thousand historical anecdotes about elite life in the late Han dynasty and the Wei-Chin period (about AD 150-420).
