Lefèvre

Though ranked with Erasmus as one of the leading scholars of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Jacques Lefevre d'Etaples has not received the scholarly attention due to a man of his intellectual stature and spiritual influence. Author has drawn on the original works and letters of Lefevre and his contemporaries in the ecclesiastical renewal movements in France and his influence on the thought of the Reformers. Hughes traces the transition from Lefevre's early career in philosophical and speculative studies to his single-minded concentration on scriptural exegesis and translation of the Bible into French. He presents in great detail the progression of Lefevre's thought, which blazed the trail that led from the Renaissance to the Reformation" -- From back cover.

Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples and the Three Maries Debates

The Three Maries pamphlets published in Paris by the celebrated humanist scholar Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples appeared between 1517 and 1519, and are virtually his only venture into independent authorship. These four short Latin texts investigated the traditions of the Magdalen and the sisters of the Virgin, and the calculation of the triduum , or three days and nights between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. Written in a spirit of profound piety, they nevertheless challenged notions of authority and powerful established devotional cults, at the very moment when Luther was mounting his own challenge to orthodoxy, and gave rise to a high-profile controversy which anticipated the response to Luther. This edition presents Lefèvre's Latin texts together with an English translation and an extensive introduction which situates the controversy in its contemporary cultural context, and thus throws new light on Lefèvre's exegesis and his distinctive Christian humanism. Lefevre James Cranstone

Few people have had the pleasure of viewing the works of 19th century British artist Lefevre James Cranstone, who thus remains overlooked and unappreciated. By telling the story of the artist's life and work, author Donald Smith helps the reader appreciate this gifted artist. The book's 143 color plates illustrate how the artist documents the cities, rural landscapes, and people of his time through his versatility with diverse media and a superb use of detail. The book focuses primarily on the artist's trip to America between 1859 and 1860, which resulted in almost 300 detailed sketches of antebellum America, including works that illustrated the cruelty of the slave trade. The volume concludes with a description of the artist's life and career in England and in Australia.
