Fractal Geometry in Biological Systems

Fractal Geometry in Biological Systems was written by the leading experts in the field of mathematics and the biological sciences together. It is intended to inform researchers in the bringing about the fundamental nature of fractals and their widespread appearance in biological systems. The chapters explain how the presence of fractal geometry can be used in an analytical way to predict outcomes in systems, to generate hypotheses, and to help design experiments. The authors make the mathematics accessible to a wide audience and do not assume prior experience in this area.

A comprehensive and authoritative textbook, Neurological Therapeutics: Principles and Practice provides a reference that is both authoritative and accessible for daily use. The textbook explores the issues underlying treatment decisions not only for the most readily treated disorders but also for those conditions with few existing, definitive therapeutic options. With 600 figures, 37 in full color, tables, and a companion volume that is portable and easy-to-use, the final product is an important reference.

Radical Ionic Systems

It is now more than 20 years since the book "Radical Ions" edited by Kaiser and Kevan appeared. It contained aspects regarding generation, identification, spin density determination and reactivity of charged molecules with an odd number of electrons. New classes of reactive ion radicals have been detected and characterised since then, most notably cation radicals of saturated organic compounds. Trapping of electrons has been found to occur not only in frozen glasses but also in organic crystals. The structure and reactions of anion radicals of saturated compounds have been clarified during the last 20 years. We have asked leading experts in the field to write separate chapters about cation radicals, anion radicals and trapped electrons as well as more complex systems of biological or technological interest. More attention is paid to recent studies of the ions of saturated compounds than to the older and previously reviewed work on aromatic ions. In the case of trapped electrons full coverage is out of the question, and focus is on recent efforts to characterise the solvation structure in ordered and disordered systems.

I know that most men, including those at ease with the problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives. Joseph Ford quoting Tolstoy (Gleick, 1987) We are used to thinking that natural objects have a certain form and that this form is determined by a characteristic scale. If we magnify the object beyond this scale, no new features are revealed. To correctly measure the properties of the object, such as len...

Starfish

A U.S. naval base is hidden among the few hundred islands of the Bahamas. Base Commander Jason Roberts relies on an old friends son, Lieutenant Billy Anderson, for answers to their incredible discovery. Andersons research team tries to locate, track, and calculate the alien crafts final underwater destination. Tracking the craft had been difficult until Andersons team installed upgrades to their current technology. Depth of the ocean offshore from the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center added to the difficulty in acquiring and tracking of the unidentified craft. The terminal flight of Starfish is salvaged under the cloak of darkness by the USS Grapple. The transfer of the craft to t...
