Chocolate and Blackness

Dabei werden die oft sklavereiähnlichen Arbeitsbedingungen auf den Kakaoplantagen ebenso analysiert wie die Verflechtung von Schokolade und Schwarzsein in der Werbung, in der Belletristik und in der Populärmusik. Sie zeigt, wie Schokolade als Metapher für Schwarzsein erheblich zur Rassifizierung und Erotisierung schwarzer Körperlichkeit beigetragen, aber immer wieder auch Möglichkeiten zur selbstermächtigenden Verwendung geliefert hat.
Judith Butler, Michel Foucault, and the Theology of Freedom
This book explores how Judith Butler’s work on gender and the shaping of the human subject and Michel Foucault's notion of parrhesia, ‘speaking the truth’, can be made fruitful for a theology of freedom. The volume illustrates the importance of three concepts - freedom, gender (body) and power (critique) - and how this triad provides the foundational categories and structural elements of a theology of freedom. By starting from an analysis of power and the performative potential of gendered embodiment, freedom can be thought of as the basis of creative and critical human action and thereby implemented in theology. The chapters feature several theological-historical case studies that are representative of topics that continue to shape contemporary Catholic norms and thought. In particular, the author reflects on the 13th century with the idea of personal sin and confession, and the 19th century with a gender ideology that has led to the marginalization of difference and dissent. The book shows how Butler and Foucault can provide essential insights for Catholic theology and is valuable reading for scholars of religion, philosophy, and gender and sexuality studies.

Colonialism and the Jews in German History
Colonialism and the Jews in German History brings together new and path-breaking studies on the historical relationship between colonialism and the Jews in Germany. The book considers the mutual influences on the situation of the Jews in Germany, including attitudes towards Jews and anti-Semitism but also Jewish self-conceptions, and the ideology and politics of German colonialism. The contributors discuss the ways in which colonial ideology and practice have affected the position of the Jews in Germany, and the relationship between anti-Semitism and colonial racism. In doing so, the volume introduces German colonialism as a relevant context for German-Jewish history, and it expands the perspective on German colonial history significantly by considering Jews both as distinct objects and also as agents within the field of German colonialism. The volume includes studies on the pre-colonial era, the phase of active German colonialism since the 1880s, and the time after Germany lost its colonies in the First World War. All these studies testify to the fact that German-Jewish history takes on additional significance if seen as part of a global history of collective relationships.

Vielfalt. Musikgeragogik und interkulturelles Musizieren
Der Band „Musikgeragogik und Interkulturelles Musizieren“ vereint wesentliche musikpädagogische Felder des 21. Jahrhunderts. Er bündelt die Ergebnisse zweier internationaler musikpädagogischer Symposien und erweitert durch zusätzliche Artikel den Blick auf diese beiden Themenfelder. Kulturphilosophie
Die Praxis des Menschen – seine Kultur – ist nicht so sehr "Gestaltung der Welt" als vielmehr "Gestaltung zur Welt" (Cassirer). Kultur ist ein Netz aus Möglichkeiten und Bedeutungen, durch die Kultur findet das Verhältnis des Menschen zur Welt seinen Ausdruck. Der Kulturphilosophie kommt die Aufgabe zu, dieses Verhältnis näher zu bestimmen. Sie ist so eine Hermeneutik der Gesamtwirklichkeit. Die Beiträge zum Schwerpunktheft Kulturphilosophie gehen eine solche Verhältnisbestimmung an. Sie fragen exemplarisch nach dem Stellenwert von Pluralität und Essenz, von Geist, Natur und Geschichte und erinnern an die Aufgabe der Kulturphilosophie, ihre Zeit in Gedanken zu fassen.
