Dissociation in Late Modern America: A Defense Against Soul?

Dissociation typically describes a psychological defense that protects the psyche from emotionally overwhelming events. However, dissociation can also contribute to maintaining and restoring relationships after suffering traumatic stress and overwhelming social strain. Two aspects of late modern American society interfere with dissociation’s contribution to social change: 1) the Enlightenment conception of human nature, on which American democracy is based, and 2) America’s sharp distinctions between public and private spheres of life. Using research on human evolution, neuroscience, trauma, and Jungian psychology, Dissociation in Late Modern America shows how Americans have become dependent on dissociative defenses in everyday life, challenging their capacity for soulful connections and living.

Trauma's Labyrinth: Reflections of a Wounded Healer

2022 Bronze Living Now Book Award 2022 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award Trauma can feel like a labyrinth, twisting on itself like a maze of despair, without end or exit. This seems particularly true in today’s chaotic world of pandemics, climate change, social conflict, and systemic violence. Increasingly, the conditions of the larger world aggravate, if not cause, the traumas in our individual lives. However, as Laura K. Kerr explores in this wide-ranging collection of essays, not only can we heal from trauma, but we can use it as an opportunity for growth and transformation, changing ourselves and the world for the better. Drawing from her experiences as researcher, trauma survivor...

Prison Writing

Reviews of the previous edition: 'A remarkable anthology wich will interest everyone concerned with the fate of prisoners and anxious to see their conditions improved': Michael McMullan, Justice of the Peace. 'This fascinating and very readable collection of fact, fiction and verse is the fifteenth issue edited and produced by two probation officers from Sheffield. We are fortunate that they have found a new publisher in Waterside Press to continue giving prisoners (and others), an opportunity to do something wich all writers crave - find an audience to communicate their feelings and experiences... The contributors give deeply personal insights into the nature of their world and prove that imagination and talent are incapable of being destroyed if people are ready to develop them... This anthology deserves to be read... by everyone who is interested in new writers experimenting with the development of their talent. Each piece is different and compelling: David Underhill, The Magistrate. This 16th edition is an entirely new collection of writings by prisoners and other people connected with prisons, from the United Kingdom and beyond.

The House by the Side of the Road is the story of the impossible dream come true. It is the story of Paul T. Sanders, a young minister with a vision to serve humanity from a rural farm rather than a pulpit. Laura Kerr tells the story of this young man's dream as it becomes a reality through his perseverance and prayer, through the steadfast encouragement of his wife Elizabeth, through the generosity of farmer Ernest Warner who gave his land, and through the dedication and generosity of spirit of all who have participated in this grand experiment in faith that today is known as The Center.
