How this surge in power is accommodated by the incumbent powers like the United States and Japan, and how the new regional powers like China and India manage the power politics that emerge will be the key determinants of regional stability.This volume examines the national maritime doctrines as well as the nuclear weapons developments at sea of the four major powers in the Asia-Pacific, namely, China, India, Japan and the United States, to see if the evolving dynamic is a cooperative or a competitive one. CPPR – Centre for Strategic Studies provided a platform for prominent strategists, think tank analysts, leading experts and academicians to discuss, debate and map the future US role in the Asia Pacific, in its 2 day international conference on U.S Rebalance and the Asia Pacific region.
Policy Choices in Internal Conflicts
In the course of the research project Internal Conflicts and Transnational Consequences, the CSA has published eleven volumes. These books cover three internal conflicts in India and those in Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Each of the conflict was studied in detail with the help of experts from different disciplines and different countries. This is the final volume of the Project which consolidates the studies done earlier, aims at crystallising some useful lessons for the countries studied and also others who continue to have long running internal conflicts. The constraints in trying to resolve the conflicts by the states and addressing the nuances of the consequences are quite complex. This volume attempts to analyse these issues and helps in identifying positive and negative outcomes of the way different governing systems have addressed the conflicts. The study highlights the importance of not only understanding the major internal conflicts but also anticipating and identifying the problems and difficulties that arise from the consequences and throws up useful policy pointers.

South Asia's Weak States
South Asia, which consists of eight states of different sizes and capabilities, is characterized by high levels of insecurity at the inter-state, intra-state, and human level: insecurity that is manifest in both traditional and non-traditional security problems—especially transnational terrorism fuelled by militant religious ideologies. To explain what has caused and contributed to the perpetual insecurity and human suffering in the region, this book engages scholars of international relations, comparative politics, historical sociology, and economic development, among others, to reveal and analyze the key underlying and proximate drivers. It argues that the problems are driven largely by two critical variables: the presence of weak states and weak cooperative interstate norms. Based on this analysis and the conclusions drawn, the book recommends specific policies for making the region secure and for developing the long lasting inter- and intra-state cooperative mechanisms necessary for the perpetuation of that security.
My Name Is Tenzin, I Am Not Chinese
Tenzin Phuntsok was brought to India from his homeland, Tibet, at the tender age of nine. He respects this decision of his elders, though he has left his mother back home, and has never been able to meet her again. Growing up in India under the care of his uncle and the school authorities, who stand in for the parents of such refugee children, he is happy enough in India, his foster home. However, being the child of a freedom fighter, he never forgets his roots, and is very conscious of his Tibetan identity. My Name Is Tenzin, I Am Not Chinese is a first person narrative of this young Tibetan’s experiences as a college student in Chennai. Written in an easy conversational style, the story is rich with humor that cloaks the poignancy of an uprooted youth’s life in a place which is poles apart from his Himalayan homeland. The book also provides a well-researched insight into the academic opportunities in Chennai.
