This book presents research on immigrants in South America and Caribbean Colombia and their relationship with the birth and development of the city of Barranquilla. As such, it explores elements that make evident customs and cultural beliefs that have influenced behavior in these regions. It discusses how these practices are reflected in the characteristics of housing, art, and cultural exhibitions, among others. Rising Returns to Schooling in Argentina, 1992-2002
There has not been much change in the premium to primary education, while the returns to secondary education increased, but by less than the premium to university. The returns to incomplete university also increased significantly. There is a signal that there might be credentialism at the tertiary level, but 15 years of schooling also represents a significant threshold. The returns to schooling are higher in the private sector. There is little evidence of screening or credentialism driving the returns to schooling, which increased significantly in Argentina from 1992 to 2002.

Climbing up the ladder and watching out for the fall: Poverty dynamics in rural Bangladesh
This paper analyzes poverty dynamics in rural Bangladesh using a nationally representative panel dataset of 5,260 rural households interviewed in 2011/12 and 2015. We find that education, savings, assets, non-farm employment, substantial safety net transfers, and women’s empowerment are key factors in breaking persistent poverty; and savings, non-farm engagement, and substantial safety net transfers prevent households from falling into poverty. The results are consistent across multinomial logit, logit, and simultaneous quantile regression models. Thus, policies and programs that address the determinants of persistent and transient poverty identified in this study hold promise for sustained poverty reduction in rural Bangladesh.

Analytical Narrative on Subnational Democracies in Colombia
This book examines the state-building process in Colombia, specifically in the Pacific Coast region. Using the regionally isolated and historically neglected Pacific Coast as a case study, the authors analyze the Colombian nation-building and democratic processes, applying diverse methodology and an interdisciplinary focus. The early chapters lay the foundation of the text through the historical reconstruction of political turmoil in Colombia and the birth of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and its confrontations with the government establishment. It then moves to a public choice analysis of public policy and clientelism within local democracies. The later chapters test the theoretical models using regional information about governability and election result patterns and discuss a further research agenda.
