Contemporary Arts Across Political Divides

This book explores what art and artists can do to create democratic spaces, forms, and languages in a world devastated by multiple crises. Artists, activists, art historians, and art curators conduct timely and critical analyses across political divides, informing the public search for an agency, dialogue and self-representation. They analyze how artists transform these social relations through aesthetic means with a shared commitment to bridging political divides and conflicts. The book uses case studies from Australia, India, Mexico, USA, Turkey, Palestine, Israel, the Balkans, Russia, Italy, Ukraine to discuss the possibility or impossibility of building avenues for participation, equitable interaction, self-organization, as well as the common creation of the imaginary and a culture of dialogue. The book pushes for a broader and more conflict-oriented understanding of art and politics.

The Routledge Companion to Decolonizing Art, Craft, and Visual Culture Education

  • Categories: Art

This companion demonstrates how art, craft, and visual culture education activate social imagination and action that is equity- and justice-driven. Specifically, this book provides arts-engaged, intersectional understandings of decolonization in the contemporary art world that cross disciplinary lines. Visual and traditional essays in this book combine current scholarship with pragmatic strategies and insights grounded in the reality of socio-cultural, political, and economic communities across the globe. Across three sections (creative shorts, enacted encounters, and ruminative research), a diverse group of authors address themes of histories, space and land, mind and body, and the digital realm. Chapters highlight and illustrate how artists, educators, and researchers grapple with decolonial methods, theories, and strategies—in research, artmaking, and pedagogical practice. Each chapter includes discursive questions and resources for further engagement with the topics at hand. The book is targeted towards scholars and practitioners of art education, studio art, and art history, K-12 art teachers, as well as artist educators and teaching artists in museums and communities.

Previous studies revealed that around 75 percent of all start-ups fail at an early stage. One main reason for this tremendous failure rate is that decision-makers are typically confronted with high levels of uncertainty about the viability of their proposed business idea. Following this argumentation, entrepreneurial decisions can be defined as complex decision-making problem under both risk and uncertainty. While risk includes quantifiable probabilities, uncertainty describes situations where neither outcomes nor their probability distribution can be assessed a priori. Consequently, the strategic decision-making context is highly complex and contains lots of “black swan events” that seems to be unpredictable. As previous research does not provide any software solutions for decision augmentation in such domains, the purpose of this study is to explore the decision- making context and then suggest novel and innovative design paradigms and design principles for decision augmentation for strategic decision-making.

The concept of schizoanalysis is Deleuze and Guattari's fusion of psychoanalytic-inspired theories of the self, the libido and desire with Marx-inspired theories of the economy, history and society. Schizoanalysis holds that art's function is both political and aesthetic – it changes perception. If one cannot change perception, then, one cannot change anything politically. This is why Deleuze and Guattari always insist that artists operate at the level of the real (not the imaginary or the symbolic). Ultimately, they argue, there is no necessary distinction to be made between aesthetics and politics. They are simply two sides of the same coin, both concerned with the formation and transfor...

Letter To Grandson Jun: I Found Myself Hiking

Raised on a farm near Changi (visited by Albert Einstein in the 1920s), Anthony Teo attended Singapore's 19th century St Anthony's Boys School and St Joseph's Institution. Having completed a course at the 330-year-old Harvard at new Cambridge in Massachusetts, USA, Anthony then went in search of America, driving across country from New York to San Francisco, through the mile-high Jackalopean landscape of Wyoming. His co-driver was his friend Leo Soong in his classic 1,000-mile-a-day steed of the 1960s — BMW 2002 ti. Leo, who unbeknownst to Anthony at the time, was Madame Chiang Kaishek's favourite nephew.Years later, Anthony was at old Cambridgeshire's 800-year-old University of Cambridge, UK as a Visiting Fellow to complete his hunt for the origins of the two univer-cities (Harvard-Cambridge and Cambridge-Cambridge Market Town).
