In a capitalist economy, taxes are more than a method of payment for government and public services. They are the most significant instrument by which the political system puts into practice a conception of economic justice. Yet there has been little effort to bring together important recent philosophical work on justice with vigorous debates about tax policy going on in national politics and public policy circles, in economics and law. The Myth of Ownership bridges this gap, offering the first book to explore tax policy from the standpoint of contemporary moral and political philosophy. Book jacket.

Moral Demands in Nonideal Theory

Moral Demands in Nonideal Theory

Is there a limit to the legitimate demands of morality? In particular, is there a limit to people's responsibility to promote the well-being of others, either directly or via social institutions? Utilitarianism admits no such limit, and is for that reason often said to be an unacceptably demanding moral and political view. In this original new study, Murphy argues that the charge of excessive demands amounts to little more than an affirmation of the status quo. The real problem with utilitarianism is that it makes unfair demands on people who comply with it in our world of nonideal compliance. Murphy shows that this unfairness does not arise on a collective understanding of our responsibility for others' well being. Thus, according to Murphy, while there is no general problem to be raised about the extent of moral demands, there is a pressing need to acknowledge the collective nature of the demands of beneficence.

A radical cell of the IRA Provos launches a conspiracy to form a Celtic Nation comprised of the Celtic areas in Europe, plus Boston and Costa Rica. Liam Murphy sets up a base in Boston under the guise of a Celtic Cultural organization and develops a cadre of leaders throughout the Celtic areas. When the conspirators complete the organization they need to govern the Celtic areas, they start planning how they will wrest control of these areas from their respective countries. It becomes obvious that negotiations or military actions will not work. They decide that only nuclear blackmail will succeed. Iraq had secretly developed three nuclear weapons and Liam's group smuggles these weapons out of Iraq. Lacking a delivery system, the conspirators simply attach radio controlled detonators to the weapons and dump them into the sea off the coasts of France, Spain, America, and England. Once detonated, these weapons would cause immense tidal waves wreaking havoc for several miles inland. Federal Agent Angelo Spaziani is tasked with preventing this disaster.

The Philosophy of Taxation and Public Finance

Most public finance books are texts, which are aimed at undergraduate or graduate students. They are overly technical in nature and appeal only to a narrow range of bureaucrats and academics. Books on taxation are written for tax practitioners and usually emphasize either what the law is or how to maneuver through the labyrinth of tax law to minimize taxes for clients. Philosophy books on taxation or public finance simply do not exist. The Philosophy of Taxation and Public Finance is different. It is written in nontechnical language and is aimed to appeal to a wide range of readers, including practitioners, academics and students in the fields of taxation, public finance, economics, law, phi...
