Helen Johnston Majercik was a Smith College graduate, Class of 1937, who led a long life. After graduating from Smith, Helen chauffeured her Aunt Anna on a cross-country auto trip with equally fun-loving relatives. Helen's life was one that was lively and full of incident. She capped it in an unusual way: she enjoyed her life so much that she decided, in her last years, to write a book about it. Helen tells of becoming an x-ray technician in the early days of that specialty and of course she introduces her husband and other family members, such as her sisters, one whose nickname was Louse. Among her book's highlights, though, are things like the description of her 'career' as a bridesmaid: she walked down the aisle no fewer than five times as an attendant, despairing at the end of ever being the bride. Helen did marry at age 42 and had one daughter at age 44. In a chapter to themselves are stories and anecdotes contributed to her book by more than a dozen of Helen's friends who assisted her in many ways after her daughter died. the combined stories give the reader the secrets to a long and happy life.
The Glens of Antrim formed one of the last Irish-speaking areas of Ulster until the early 1900s. Until the opening of the Antrim coast road in the 1850s Irish was universally spoken in the Glens and on Rathlin. The turn of the 19th century saw the Gaelic Revival which in the north of Ireland involved both Unionists and Nationalists in an effort to preserve Irish as a spoken language. This work evolved out of a love for my ancestors, one being John Whitelaw, the Covenanter Monkland Martyr, who was executed for his religious beliefs in Edinburgh, 1683. While searching for his records I came across reference to thousands of other Scottish Covenanters. This Index lists those Covenanters found in some books written about the period between 1630 and 1712.There are many, many more Covenanters, whose names need to be added to this work, and, God willing, I will do it. This volume of diverse contributions revisits the European religious construction of the Indian Other. In their attempt to identify their European Self, missionaries from Germany constructed India as their Other and archived such constructions. Such archival narratives epitomize the conviction of these missionaries in their Christian faith and their belief in the superiority of the European Self. These narratives, however, provide readers (for whose eyes they were not meant originally) with spaces to locate their own past and to identify their own Self. Victorian Verse: The Poetics of Everyday Life casts new light on nineteenth-century poetry by examining the period through its popular verse forms and their surrounding social and media landscape. The volume offers insight into two central concepts of both the Victorian era and our own—status and taste—and how cultural hierarchies then and now were and are constructed and broken. By recovering the lost diversity of Victorian verse, the book maps the breadth of Victorian writing and reading practices, illustrating how these seemingly minor verse genres actually possessed crucial social functions for Victorians, particularly in education, leisure practices, the cultural production of class, and the formation of individual and communal identities. The essays consider how “major” Victorian poets, such as the Pre-Raphaelites, were also committed to writing and reading “minor” verse, further troubling the clear-cut notions of canonicity by examining the contradictions of value.
