The chance discovery of a 30-year-old porn film leads back to the film's maker, Tim Purdom, and the London of the late 50s and early 60s. Purdom was a pioneer of the British blue movie as well as a figure on the periphery of the Profumo sex scandal. He directed 8 films--but who was directing him, and what was their hidden agenda? And where is Tim now? "London Blues" is a provocative, totally original crime novel. For more than two decades, Anthony Frewin was assistant film director to Stanley Kubrick.
Many aspects of British detective fiction are intriguingly different from the American detective fiction. And, confusingly, many of the British women detectives who have made it to American television are far from typical of the latest women detectives. This work is a study of British detective fiction with female protagonists written by women. Authors included are P.D. James, Jennie Melville, Liza Cody, Val McDermid, Joan Smith and Susan Moody. Special attention is paid to the evolution of the British female sleuth from the 1960s to the year 2000, particularly the 1980s, and how this shaped and altered detective fiction. Also discussed is the effect of the British judicial system and gun laws on detective fiction and real life, the types of crimes women detectives usually investigate, why certain directions have been taken and which ones may be taken in the future, issues being raised by the authors, and new women authors of detective fiction with female protagonists.
C. S. Lewis--On the Christ of a Religious Economy. II. Knowing Salvation, opens with a discussion of the Anscombe-Lewis debate (the theological issues relating to revelation and reason, Christ the Logos). This leads into Lewis on the Church (the body of Christ) and his understanding of religion: how is salvation enacted through the churches, how do we know we are saved? This concludes with, for Lewis, the question of sufferance and atonement, substitution and election, deliverance and redemption: heaven, hell, resurrection, and eternity--Christ's work of salvation on the cross. What did Lewis say of humanity in relation to God, now Immanuel, God with us, incarnate, crucified, resurrected, an...
In Confessing and Believing, Trevor Hart takes readers on a guided tour of the Apostles' Creed, one of the most ancient, universally recognized, and important statements of faith ever penned by the Christian Church. The Creeds' lasting value is not owed simply to its age--it has identifiable roots in the earliest baptismal ceremonies of the earliest Christians--but because, as Hart's careful interpretation demonstrates, the Creed is as comprehensive in its scope as it is concise in its testimony. While the Creeds' intrinsic values make it ideal for regular use in worship, Hart capitalizes on the Creed's structure and highly concentrated nature to provide a framework for teaching the essentia...
Essays on authors and poets in this volume represent some of the best-known writers of children's literature in the twentieth century. This period is marked by certain characteristics, such as stories of groups of children bonded together, the emergence of strong female protagonists, the "career books", and a consciously subdued presence of pain and suffering. Many of these works are valued for the window they provided upon a culture now gone
Twenty years ago, people thought only cranks or sentimentalists could be seriously concerned about the treatment of non-human animals. However, since then philosophers, scientists and welfarists have raised public awareness of the issue; and they have begun to lay the foundations for an enormous change in human practice. This book is a record of the development of 'animal rights' through the eyes of one highly-respected and well-known thinker. This book brings together for the first time Stephen R.L. Clark's major essays in one volume. Written with characteristic clarity and persuasion, Animals and Their Moral Standing will be essential reading for both philosophers and scientists, as well as the general reader concerned by the debates over animal rights and treatment.
