Our Ulmer Heritage
Heinrich Philip Ulmer (ca. 1700-ca. 1755)(formerly Baron Heinrich Philip Von Ulm) left Germany and eventually immigrated to South Carolina in 1752. He married (1) Telle Baumgarden and (2) Annie Guerry Gates. He died in Prince William's Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina. Descendants lived in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and elsewhere.

Cross the Veil and Near Me Dwell is the story of Jane LaRoi, a young girl who has the ability to see and communicate with her own ancestors in the ethereal realm but struggles to do so with her family and peers on the physical plane. In essence, she is able to act as a bridge between realms and realities. Jane's ancestors provide her with guidance while they fight to overcome a power-hungry overlord on the ethereal plane who desires to control Jane and therefore her entire family in both realms of existence. This is Jane's life story from infancy through the fourth grade. Her older sister Josie teases her and her parents do not understand how gifted she really is. Her ethereal family develops her intellect and prepares her to protect herself from the evil Zank Xu who sets his plan in motion by possessing his own family members on the physical plane. The story is a combined fascination, science fiction and fantasy that neatly weaves together history, physics, and both Eastern and Western philosophy. The setting includes both the physical and ethereal realms of existence and is narrated as a reminiscence by the main character.

Entangled Empathy
In Entangled Empathy, scholar and activist Lori Gruen argues that rather than focusing on animal “rights,” we ought to work to make our relationships with animals right by empathetically responding to their needs, interests, desires, vulnerabilities, hopes, and unique perspectives. Pointing out that we are already entangled in complex and life-altering relationships with other animals, Gruen guides readers through a new way of thinking about—and practicing—animal ethics. Gruen describes entangled empathy as a type of caring perception focused on attending to another’s experience of well-being. It is an experiential process involving a blend of emotion and cognition in which we recognize we are in relationships with others and are called upon to be responsive and responsible in these relationships by attending to another. When we engage in entangled empathy we are transformed and in that transformation we can imagine less violent, more meaningful ways of being together.
