Italian Modernism
Italian Modernism was written in response to the need for an historiographic and theoretical reconsideration of the concepts of Decadentismo and the avant-garde within the Italian critical tradition. Focussing on the confrontation between these concepts and the broader notion of international modernism, the essays in this important collection seek to understand this complex phase of literary and artistic practices as a response to the epistemes of philosophical and scientific modernity at the end of the nineteenth century and in the first three decades of the twentieth. Intellectually provocative, this collection is the first attempt in the field of Italian Studies at a comprehensive account of Italian literary modernism. Each contributor documents how previous critical categories, employed to account for the literary, artistic, and cultural experiences of the period, have provided only partial and inadequate descriptions, preventing a fuller understanding of the complexities and the interrelations among the cultural phenomena of the time. Neoavanguardia'
The Italian neoavanguardia, a literary and artistic movement characterized by a strong push towards experimentation, playfulness, and new forms of language usage, was founded at the beginning of the 1960s by a group of poets, critics, artists, and composers. Although the neoavanguardia movement has been primarily defined and examined in a literary context, it is broadly discussed in this collection as also affecting other artistic forms such as the visual arts, music, and architecture. In examining this often controversial movement, Neoavanguardia's contributors include topics such as critical-theoretical debates, the crisis of literature as defined within the movement, and issues of gender in 1960s Italian art and literature. This important collection interrogates the arts as creative codes, their ability to question reality, and their capacity to survive. In so doing, it paves the way for future interdisciplinary investigations of this complex cultural formation.
Theatrical Translation and Film Adaptation

Differences, Deceits and Desires
Italian crime fiction (known as gialli in Italy) has developed from a popular genre to a fully-fledged literary genre; and in the past thirty years it has gradually become the focus of growing interest from literary critics as well as the reading public. This collection of twelve essays is the first one in English to deal exclusively with Italian crime fiction. The essays are scholarly yet accessible contributions to the growing research in this field. They analyze texts by well-known authors (such as Umberto Eco, Leonardo Sciascia and Andrea Camilleri) as well as works by younger writers. They bring together four of the most significant strands of Italian gialli: the way gialli develop or subvert the tradition and conventions of the crime genre; regional specificity within Italian crime fiction; gialli by and about women, lesbians and gay men; and representations of Italy in gialli written by English-speaking writers.
Futurism
This volume offers a unique and fresh perspective on Italian Futurism by approaching it, for the first time, through the lens of microstoria. In this 'history from below' of what is one of Europe's most famous and important avant-garde movements, large-scale questions on the history of Futurism are explored by focusing on objects, practices and situations as diverse as The Church, Puppets, The Letterhead or Gymnastics. With contributions from fifteen renowned international scholars, the book offers an exciting, kaleidoscopic view of Futurism and its multiple artistic, political and societal connections. The final chapter of the book is an interview with GUnter Berghaus, one of Futurism's most dedicated and prolific scholars today, to whom the book is dedicated. This volume explores the fraught relationship between Futurism and the Sacred. Like many fin-de-siècle intellectuals, the Futurists were fascinated by various forms of esotericism such as theosophy and spiritualism and saw art as a privileged means to access states of being beyond the surface of the mundane world. At the same time, they viewed with suspicion organized religions as social institutions hindering modernization and ironically used their symbols. In Italy, the theorization of "Futurist Sacred Art" in the 1930s began a new period of dialogue between Futurism and the Catholic Church. The essays in the volume span the history of Futurism from 1909 to 1944 and consider its different configurations across different disciplines and geographical locations, from Polish and Spanish literature to Italian art and American music.
