This book provides a novel way of looking at translational phenomena in contemporary performances of Attic tragedies via the formidable work of three directors, each of whom bears the aesthetic imprint of Samuel Beckett: Theodoros Terzopoulos, Şahika Tekand and Tadashi Suzuki. Through a discerningly transdisciplinary approach, translation becomes re(trans)formed into a mode of physical action, its mimetic nature reworked according to the individual directors’ responses to Attic tragedies. As such, the highly complex notion of mimesis comes into prominence as a thematic thread, divulging the specific ways in which the pathos epitomised in the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides is reawakened on the contemporary stage. By employing mimesis as a conceptual motor under the overarching rubric of the art of tragic theatre, the monograph appeals to a wide range of scholarly readers and practitioners across the terrains of Translation Studies, Theatre Studies, Classical Reception, Comparative Literature and Beckett Studies.

The victory ode was a short-lived poetic genre in the fifth century BC, but its impact has been substantial. Pindar, Bacchylides and others are now among the most widely read Greek authors precisely because of their significance for the literary development of poetry between Homer and tragedy and their historical involvement in promoting Greek rulers. Their influence was so great that it ultimately helped to define the European notion of lyric from the Renaissance onwards. This collection of essays by international experts examines the victory ode from a range of angles: its genesis and evolution, the nature of the commissioning process, the patrons, context of performance and re-performance, and the poetics of the victory ode and its exponents. Rome is 'the city of seven hills'. This book examines the need for the 'seven hills' cliché, its origins, development, impact and borrowing. It explores how the cliché relates to Rome's real volcanic terrain and how it is fundamental to how we define this. Its chronological remit is capacious: Varro, Virgil and Claudian at one end, on, through the work of Renaissance antiquarians, to embrace frescoes and nineteenth-century engravings. These artists and authors celebrated the hills and the views from these hills, in an attempt to capture Rome holistically. By studying their efforts, this book confronts the problems of encapsulating Rome and 'cityness' more broadly and indeed the artificiality of any representation, whether a painting, poem or map. In this sense, it is not a history of the city at any one moment in time, but a history of how the city has been, and has to be, perceived.
