This book contains the papers presented at the International Workshop on Visual Fonn, held in Capri (Italy) on May 27-30, 1991. The workshop, sponsored by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (!APR), has been jointly organized by the Dipartimento di Infonnatica e Sisternistica of the University of Naples and the Istituto di Cibemetica of the National Research Council of Italy, and has focussed on Shape. Shape is a distinctive feature of most patterns, so that recognition can often be attained through shape discrimination. The organizers of the workshop shared the general feeling manifested by researchers, that it was time for holding a meeting exclusively devoted to a feature so crucial for both human and machine perception. During this meeting, problems and prospects in the field of 2D and 3D shape analysis could be discussed extensively, so as to provide an effective, updated picture of the current research activity in which shape plays a central role. Indeed, many highly qualified researchers in the field positively reacted to the Call for Papers.
Efficient Frequent Subtree Mining Beyond Forests
A common paradigm in distance-based learning is to embed the instance space into a feature space equipped with a metric and define the dissimilarity between instances by the distance of their images in the feature space. Frequent connected subgraphs are sometimes used to define such feature spaces if the instances are graphs, but identifying the set of frequent connected subgraphs and subsequently computing embeddings for graph instances is computationally intractable. Image Analysis and Processing
For the third time the Italian Group on Pattern Recogni tion has organized an International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing (lAP) gathering together the most active groups working in this area in our country. The first International Conference lAP was held in Pavia (1980) and the second one in Selva di Fasano (1982). A selected set of distinguished speakers has been invited to talk about their personal experience and views on industrial applications (H Freeman), the critical analysis of medical image processing (D Rutovitz), the advances of robot vision languages (M Silva) and the availability of AI technology for imI?roving the performance of PR and IP programs (J M Chassery). Four different areas have been covered by the papers submitted and refereed) to the conference first and to a scientific committee next, namely IP Techniques, Multiprocessor Architectures, Robot Vision and IP Applications. A final paper giving the results of a census of the Italian groups is provided showing, with some detail, typical research lines as pursued in working groups both at the University and Industry. About 39 groups are presently active in 12 different places of the peninsula.

This two volume set (LNCS 8156 and 8157) constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing, ICIAP 2013, held in Naples, Italy, in September 2013. The 162 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 354 submissions. The papers aim at highlighting the connection and synergies of image processing and analysis with pattern recognition and machine learning, human computer systems, biomedical imaging and applications, multimedia interaction and processing, 3D computer vision, and understanding objects and scene.
