An Incomplete Dictionary of Show Birds

An Incomplete Dictionary of Show Birds

"It all started very innocently I suppose, but then it gradually turned into an obsession ...." The first inkling of this obsession came when British photographer Luke Stephenson (born 1983) met an artist who photographed pigeons--side on, against a blank background. Impressed by the simplicity of these images, Stephenson began to photograph birds. His first subjects belonged to the treasurer of the UK Budgie Society, who deemed his portraits "crap" because he had omitted the legs and tails. He subsequently developed an eye for the nuances of bird photography, and, making a specialty of photographing show birds of all kinds, developed the body of work gathered in this volume. While Stephenson's photographs depict these birds with apparent neutrality (against a variety of colored backgrounds), Michael Smith observes in his foreword to this volume that "they live in an overlap between the natural and manmade worlds, and say as much about the culture that created them as they do about nature."

This book offers the first comprehensive overview of alternative approaches to architectural practice. At a time when many commentators are noting that alternative and richer approaches to architectural practice are required if the profession is to flourish, this book provides multiple examples from across the globe of how this has been achieved and how it might be achieved in the future. Particularly pertinent in the current economic climate, this book offers the reader new approaches to architectural practice in a changing world. It makes essential reading for any architect, aspiring or practicing.

For clown lovers and art lovers alike, the only collection of clown faces painted on eggs anywhere in the world The Clown Egg Register is a unique record of two hundred and fifty clown faces, each one painted on to an egg. The eggs act as copyright for a clown's personal visual identity, preserving the unwritten rule that a clown must never copy the face of another. It is a tradition that began in the United Kingdom in the 1940s at Clowns International, the oldest established club for clowns. In this book, the inimitably eccentric collection of images is paired with biographies of each clown, revealing details of their private and public lives, and giving a glimpse into this outmoded art form that continues to delight and terrify children everywhere.

Clown Paintings

With texts by premier comedians such as Steve Martin, Jay Leno, Woody Allen, Goldie Hawn, Lisa Kudro, Whoopi Goldberg, Gary Shandling, Martin Short and more. CLOWN PAINTINGS is a twisty illustrated book that showcases 65 full-colour, outrageously compelling clown portraits, painted by amateurs and selected by actor and director Diane Keaton. By turns hilarious and heartfelt, joyful and mortifying, Keaton found herself as mesmerised by their mute eloquence as by their bad taste, and culled these wild images from her own private collection.
