A Stable and Transparent Framework for Adaptive Shared Control of Robots

Robotic research and developments in computing technologies including artificial intelligence have led to significant improvements in autonomous capabilities of robots. Yet, human supervision is advisable and, in many cases, necessary when robots interact with real-world, outside-lab environments. This is due to the fact that complete autonomy in robots has not yet been achieved. When robots encounter challenges beyond their capabilities, a viable solution is to include human operators in the loop, who can support robots through teleoperation, taking complete control or shared control. This monograph focuses on a special form of shared control, namely mixed-initiative, where the final comman...

Nanostructures in Ferroelectric Films for Energy Applications: Grains, Domains, Interfaces and the Engineering Methods presents methods of engineering nanostructures in ferroelectric films to improve their performance in energy harvesting and conversion and storage. Ferroelectric films, which have broad applications, including the emerging energy technology, usually consist of nanoscale inhomogeneities. For polycrystalline films, the size and distribution of nano-grains determines the macroscopic properties, especially the field-induced polarization response. For epitaxial films, the energy of internal long-range electric and elastic fields during their growth are minimized by formation of s...

Lions 324B1 District Directory (2013-14)

Print Edition of Lions District 324B1 Directory for 2013-14 was released by District Governor MJF Lion S Shanmugam in August 2013, during his regime. Considering the developments in Mobile Technology, Digital Directories were introduced for Lionism in November 2015, by Lion Dr Er J Shivakumaar. To create Archives of Lions Directories Digitally and make available in every Lion's Mobile Phones, This Edition is Digitised in September 2016. This is replica of the Print Edition and enables availability of information on previous years and will serve as a reference source.

Superconducting Materials for High Energy Colliders

The ELOISATRON (ELN) Project aims at a future proton supercollider with 100-500 TeV energy per beam and 1034-1036 cm-2s-1 luminosity. While the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is being implemented at CERN, it is very timely to study the feasibility of the next generation of hadron colliders at the extreme limits of energy and luminosity. In this respect, the achievement of extremely high magnetic fields and the production of accelerating rf cavities with very low losses are a crucial point in the actual construction design of such a collider. The search for superconducting materials with suitable properties to be used in this field has gained a new impulse after the discovery of the so-called hi...

Good Cascade Impactor Practices, AIM and EDA for Orally Inhaled Products

The purpose of this publication is to introduce a new, simpler and more effective way in which to interpret pharmaceutical aerosol particle size data from orally inhaled products (OIPs). Currently, the compendial and regulatory requirements dictate the need for measurements by full resolution multi-stage cascade impactor (CI), a process that is demanding for the operator, time consuming, prone to experimental error, and challenging for method transfers from one laboratory to another. Furthermore, we shall show that the current practice of reducing information from mass-weighted aerodynamic particle size distribution (APSD) measurements through the use of CI stage groupings is not the most effective decision-making tool for OIP quality control (QC) in comparison with newly introduced, mutually-independent efficient data analysis (EDA) metrics that can be derived either from full resolution or abbreviated impactor measurements (AIM).

Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns in Human Diseases

The core of this three-volume book deals with damage-associated molecular patterns abbreviated “DAMPs”, which are unique molecules that save life and fight for survival of all organisms on this planet by triggering robust inflammatory/immune defense responses upon any injury, including those caused by pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. However, these molecules also have a dark side: when produced in excess upon severe insults, they can trigger serious human diseases. The three volumes present current understanding of the importance of DAMP-promoted immune responses in the etiopathogenesis of human diseases and explore how this understanding is impacting diagnosis, prognosis, and fut...
