Islamic Banking and Finance in the European Union

As an introduction to the complex issue of harmonization of legal and regulatory structure of the European financial system and Islamic finance, this is a useful and welcome volume. The ideas, insights and practical issues addressed in the informed papers that compose the book should be valuable for academics and students of finance, and to those who provide legal and financial services. The book will be helpful also to European regulators who have yet to appreciate the importance of Islamic finance and its potential contribution to financial globalization as well as to European economic growth. Islamic Economics: Principles and Analysis

With the impressive emergence of Islamic finance as a branch of Islamic economics, the need for a solid knowledge base that encompasses theories, thoughts and applications related to the subject increased in importance. However, writing about Islamic economics is a great challenge due to the differences in opinion on many of its issues. This includes methodologies for determining the Islamic perspective on economic concepts and issues as well as applicable solutions for today’s economic and social problems. It is further argued that Islamic economics topics are not as clear as those in conventional economics as they have their own religious, spiritual and social dimensions. The points of c...

Islamic Finance in the Financial Markets of Europe, Asia and America

Among international financial centres (IFCs), London is known as the ‘Western hub of Islamic Finance’, on account of its well-developed legal infrastructure. This is the first book to be written about Islamic finance operations in the Eurozone. The book offers an in-depth description of International Financial Centres and the growth of Islamic Finance, compares the growth of Islamic financ...

An Islamic Model for Stabilization and Growth

An Islamic Model for Stabilization and Growth

This book argues that the macroeconomic policy adjustment models recommended by the IMF and the World Bank for implementation in many Muslim countries, with substantial donor financial support, have not been effective. Economic indicators show low economic growth, persistent fiscal and external deficits and limited industrialization. Also, these countries are experiencing increases in unemployment, poverty and substantial growth in income and wealth ‎inequalities. These facts ‎underline an urgent need to produce an alternative to the failed conventional macroeconomic model in order to address the challenge of ‎macroeconomic and social adjustment policies. The project posits and investigates the idea that the Islamic economic model prescribed in the Quran and applied by the Prophet (sawa) could be the ideal model for Muslim as well as non-Muslim ‎countries.

This paper presents some economic dimensions of the major Islamic financing techniques in a comparative perspective. The comparative economics of these techniques has been discussed with respect to (a) their distinctive economic features, (b) role of these features in economic decision making, and (c) macro-economic consequences It has been argued that the permissibility and availability of a variety of modes of financing with different economic implications gives tremendous flexibility to individuals as well as society in the management of their financial affairs.
