Cardiff After Dark is the first monograph by British-based Polish photographer Maciej Dakowicz. Dakowicz spent five years photographing the nighttime revelries that take place in Cardiff over the weekend. Focused around a few pedestrianized streets in the city centre, Dakowicz's images capture nightlife fueled by alcohol and emotions. The arc of an evening's entertainment is captured in these candid photographs, which reveal fun and hilarity as well as fighting and drunken exhaustion. There are stag nights and hen parties, men dressed as superheroes and women dressed as Playboy bunnies, mountains of discarded chip wrappers, arrests by the police, and lots and lots of posing for photographs. Dakowicz's images, at times shocking or upsetting, form an important documentary photobook of British urban life in the early part of the 21st century.

The Divinity Gene

A mob of teens descends upon Paris in the thrall of a self-help author; a grotesque yard-sale statuette frees a dying man from his silence; the hottest club in town is staffed by angels. This is the uncanny world of The Divinity Gene, Matthew J. Trafford's debut story collection, and it bristles with humour, pathos, and imaginative power. Skewering urban culture even as it conjures up the magic in the mundane, the stories of "The Divinity Gene" map the frailty of the human heart. Caught in the crosshairs of faith and science, its characters-bereaved, sidelined, cast adrift-journey forth to undiscovered places, in search of something to believe in, someone to love, always with disarming results. A passionately devout scientist clones Jesus Christ from the DNA contained in holy relics; a man makes a Faustian cyber deal with the devil for the sake of his family; bereaved parents sign on for an unorthodox government reparations project following a school tragedy. Masterfully original, deeply human, "The Divinity Gene" introduces a bold and evocative new writer.

Winter 8000

'He appeared, without a word, in the tent's entrance, covered in ice. He looked like anyone would after spending over twenty-four hours in a hurricane at over 8,000 metres. In winter. In the Karakoram. He was so exhausted he couldn't speak.' Of all the games mountaineers play on the world's high mountains, the hardest – and cruellest – is climbing the fourteen peaks over 8,000 metres in the bitter cold of winter. Ferocious winds that can pick you up and throw you down, freezing temperatures that burn your lungs and numb your bones, weeks of psychological torment in dark isolation: these are adventures for those with an iron will and a ruthless determination. For the first time, award-win...
