Sem as riquezas “inesgotáveis” de Angola e Moçambique ou a vigorosa produção agrícola das ilhas de S. Tomé e Príncipe, o arquipélago de Cabo Verde ocupou, em todo o caso, um lugar à parte na ideologia ultramarina portuguesa a partir dos anos 30 do século passado. Dir-se-ia que a sua importância não passou tanto pelo valor comercial, mas pela “imagem” de colónia africana mais “civilizada” e até de colónia mais aparentada com a metrópole. Embora já desde o século XIX, o cabo-verdiano gozasse, pelo menos teoricamente, da plena cidadania portuguesa e fosse reconhecido como “assimilado” aos “padrões civilizacionais europeus”, seria preciso esperar pelo desenvolvimento da propaganda estadonovista para que tal facto passasse a ser amplamente publicitado. Changing Africa: the First Literary Generation of Independent Cape Verde
Scholars have been curious about the development of arts & letters in Africa since the last European colonies on that continent attained independence in 1975. On Cape Verde, the Portuguese entered into close relations with Black Africa, represented by enslaved men, women & children it carried there from the nearest mainland. From the mid-19th century on, works of fiction & poetry were written in Cape Verde, but this lit. remained a regional or colonial variant of the lit. of Portugal. The foundations of a national lit. were laid between 1935 & 1960, with a group of intellectuals gathered around the poet Jorge Barbosa.
