Portuguese Studies on Medieval Illuminated Manuscripts
Comprises the most recent studies on illuminated manuscripts carried out by the research group "Medieval texts and images," coordinated by Prof. Maria Adelaide Miranda of the Institute for Medieval Studies (Universidade Nova de Lisboa). New approaches and methodologies have been explored in order to carry out innovative and interdisciplinary research. The research group has become a leader in research on illuminated manuscripts in Portugal and is now one of the largest of such groups in the Iberian Peninsula.
An Account of the Discoveries of the Portuguese in the Interior of Angola and Mozambique
"Commerce of Lisbon, with the Markets of Western-Africa, in the Year 1803: The Trade carried on with the African settlements, is always in our [Portugal] favour, the balance being for us, as may be seen by the balance from 1796, up to the present time. It ought nevertheless to be observed, that a real entry is wanting from Angola, Bissao, and Cacheu, in consequence of these places carrying on their Slave Trade through Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, and Maranham, from whence some articles are received, such as ivory, wax, &c. without any distinction having been made of them. The greatest export articles are Asiatic goods, amounting nearly to a million, and this export was less compared with 1802, to the amount to 100,000 cruzados."--Page 162.
Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts in the British Isles: The Spanish and Portuguese manuscripts
The most important Sephardi illuminated manuscripts are in British collections. Although many of their illustrations have been published previously, they have never been published in toto. Each of the manuscripts presented is treated from several aspects, codicological, historical and decorative, with a detailed description of each subject depicted.
Before Middle Passage: Translated Portuguese Manuscripts of Atlantic Slave Trading from West Africa to Iberian Territories, 1513-26
On the 20th of January 1526, the Santiago left Lisbon bound for Africa with a cargo of brass and tin bracelets, round bells, barber basins and cloth; by early October the ship was back in Portugal with a very different cargo, 108 enslaved Africans. With chilling detachment the ship’s trading log records the commodification of human beings, the prices paid for them, the sums received for their sale and the number who did not survive the crossing.
