Demand, Complexity, and Long-Run Economic Evolution

The purpose of this contributed volume is to consider how global consumption patterns will develop in the next few decades, and what the consequences of that development will be for the economy, policymakers, and society at large. In the long run, the extent to which economic growth translates into better living conditions strongly depends on how rising affluence and new technologies shape consumer preferences. The ongoing rise in household income in developing countries raises some important questions: Will consumption patterns always continue to expand in the same manner as we have witnessed in the previous two centuries? If not, how might things evolve differently? And what implications would such changes hold for not only our understanding of consumption behavior but also our pursuit of more sustainable societies?

Handbook of Computational Social Science for Policy

This open access handbook describes foundational issues, methodological approaches and examples on how to analyse and model data using Computational Social Science (CSS) for policy support. Up to now, CSS studies have mostly developed on a small, proof-of concept, scale that prevented from unleashing its potential to provide systematic impact to the policy cycle, as well as from improving the understanding of societal problems to the definition, assessment, evaluation, and monitoring of policies. The aim of this handbook is to fill this gap by exploring ways to analyse and model data for policy support, and to advocate the adoption of CSS solutions for policy by raising awareness of existing...

Digital Working Lives

Recent innovations in digital technologies are fundamentally transforming the world of work. A digital gig economy is emerging that threatens to displace traditional labour relations based on legally regulated labour contracts. Companies like Uber, Deliveroo, or Amazon Mechanical Turk rely increasingly on ‘independent contractors’ who earn piece-rate wages by completing tasks sent to them via their smartphones. This development understandably pushes workers to desire more autonomy, but what would workers’ autonomy mean in the digital age? This book argues that the digital gig economy undermines workers’ autonomy by putting digital technology in charge of workers’ surveillance, leading to exploitation, alienation, and exhaustion. To secure a more sustainable future of work, digital technologies should instead be transformed into tools that support human development instead of subordinating it to algorithmic control. The best guarantee for human autonomy is a politics that transforms digital platforms into convivial tools that obey the rhythm of human life.

The innovation ecosystem around the world is getting clogged up. Looking around us, there are numerous problems like polluted cities, obesity, health care, access to education, water supply and the list goes on. Sadly, much of the technology being built even in leading startup ecosystems around the world is short-sighted and focused on quick profitability rather than solving problems that millions face on a daily basis. This book is a call to return to basics and focus on innovation around actual problems that the normal person faces in his life around the world. We present a systematic approach to building early stage technology companies. We provide a collection of experiential decision fr...

Advances in Data Science

This volume highlights recent advances in data science, including image processing and enhancement on large data, shape analysis and geometry processing in 2D/3D, exploration and understanding of neural networks, and extensions to atypical data types such as social and biological signals. The contributions are based on discussions from two workshops under Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), namely the second Women in Data Science and Mathematics (WiSDM) Research Collaboration Workshop that took place between July 29 and August 2, 2019 at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) in Providence, Rhode Island, and the third Women in Shape (WiSh) Re...

Crowdfunding is becoming an increasingly popular method to finance projects of every kind and scale. This contributed volume is one of the earliest books presenting scientific and research-based perspectives of crowdfunding, its development, and future. The European Crowdfunding Network (ECN) and its scientific work group, together with FGF e.V., invited both researchers and practitioners to contribute to this first state-of-the-art edited volume on crowdfunding in Europe. This book contributes to a better comprehension of crowdfunding, encourages further fundamental research and contributes to a systematization of this new field of research. The book also features expert contributions by practitioners to enhance and complement the scientific perspective. This book can be used as a guideline and shall advance classification in an emerging research field.
