The central objective of the project "Bairros periféricos: integraçao ou marginalidade?" that originated the present edition was to verify how much the public policies responded to the expectations of the marginalized population of the peripheral areas of the city of Riberao Preto (Sao Paulo). The city nicknamed "Brazilian California", for its prosperous industries, wealth and privileged weather has a contrasting dimension of social segregation revealed in the growing illegal settlements and deterioration of life conditions in the neighborhoods constructed through state programs of social housing.
