Diplomatics in the Eastern Mediterranean 1000-1500
In the politically and militarily complex world of the medieval Eastern Mediterranean people and entities of different ethnic, religious and linguistic backgrounds came into close contact at many different levels, from everyday dealings in the marketplace to high diplomacy between competing states, thus providing scope for fertile cross-cultural interaction and permeation. Court Ceremonies and Rituals of Power in Byzantium and the Medieval Mediterranean
Publicly performed rituals and ceremonies form an essential part of medieval political practice and court culture. This applies not only to western feudal societies, but also to the linguistically and culturally highly diversified environment of Byzantium and the Mediterranean basin. The continuity of Roman traditions and cross-fertilization between various influences originating from Constantinople, Armenia, the Arab-Muslim World, and western kingdoms and naval powers provide the framework for a distinct sphere of ritual expression and ceremonial performance. Deeds Done Beyond the Sea
This volume celebrates Peter Edbury’s career by bringing together seventeen essays by colleagues, former students and friends which focus on three of his major research interests: the great historian of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, William of Tyre, and his Historia rerum in partibus transmarinis gestarum and its continuations; medieval Cyprus, in particular under the Lusignans; and the Military Orders in the Middle Ages. All based on original research, the contributions to this volume include new work on manuscripts, ranging from a Hospitaller rental document of the twelfth century to a seventeenth-century manuscript of Cypriot interest; studies of language and terminology in William of Tyre’s chronicle and its continuations; thematic surveys; legal and commercial investigations pertaining to Cyprus; aspects of memorialization, and biographical studies. The Chronique d’Ernoul and the Colbert-Fontainebleau Continuation of William of Tyre (Volume 2)
Volume 2 of the two-volume set MMed 135: These volumes offer the first critical edition of the Chronique d’Ernoul and the so-called Colbert-Fontainebleau (or Acre) Continuation of William of Tyre in over 150 years. The material is accompanied by an extensive introduction, glossary and bibliography. These two thirteenth-century narratives recount the story of the crusades and the Latin East. Both are anonymous; both employed the French vernacular and both contain accounts that are essential for anyone studying the subject. The Chronique d’Ernoul was completed in the 1230s in northern France. The main part of the Colbert-Fontainebleau Continuation of William of Tyre dates to the late 1240s and is a reworking of Ernoul with material going up to 1277; it was composed in the Latin East.
Sacred Mobilities in Byzantium and Beyond
Questions about space and the sacred are now central to Byzantine studies. Recent scholarship has addressed issues of embodiment and performance, power and identity, environmental perceptions and territorial imaginations.
