Bamboo -- a major non-wood forest product -- is an ancient woody grass widely distributed in tropical, subtropical and mild temperate zones. It is an integral part of forestry, but is also widely spread outside forests, including farmlands, riverbanks, roadsides and urban areas. Bamboo is quickly changing its image from the "poor man's tree" to a high-tech, industrial raw material and substitute for wood. This study, prepared by FAO jointly with the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan, is an initiative to incorporate bamboo into the FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) program. A total of 22 countries responded to the FAO/INBAR call for information and submitted national reports. Although data availability and quality are often weak, the main value of the study is that it has established a systematic methodology and has launched the most comprehensive assessment of global bamboo resources to date.--Publisher's description.
Women and youth-led agri-enterprises (WYE) (which may also be operating as family businesses) in agricultural value chains have been identified as catalysts for rural transformation given their potential for creating employment and stimulating value addition both on and off-farm. Given that agriculture and food systems are likely to remain the key generators of employment in Ghana over the coming decades, and that 80% of all activities in the midstream of food value chain are undertaken by SMEs in Africa. It is very much necessary to generate the evidence to support the argument that family, women and youth-led agribusinesses have a key role to play in the rural transformation pathway underway in Ghana.

The year was 1935 - and with fascism threatening and a civil war in Spain looming it was turbulent times ahead for Sir James McKay, chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service. However, these events paled into insignificance compared with a compromised Berlin operation. His deep-cover agent, a German scientist working on the advanced Enigma coding machine, was missing. To add to his woes Hitler had violated the Treaty of Versailles and was giving succour to the Spanish Nationalist Government and expecting payment in return. This payment Sir James reasoned would be access through Spain to Gibraltar. Should this happen he had an alternative plan - Tenerife. Unfortunately, it transpired that Hitler had thought similarly and beaten him to the Canary Island archipelago. Enter Sir James' protégé, the suave, womanising, but lethal Scott Rutherford to unravel Sir James' woes.
