Originally published in 2010, this book has since become one of the seminal works in the rapidly evolving field of body piercings, tattoos, and permanent make-up. Authorities, body art professionals, and the general public have become increasingly aware of the risks associated with these practices and the need for better regulation. This second, extensively revised edition includes an update on the literature and focuses more on the epidemiology and classification of adverse reactions. In particular, it addresses recent findings on tattoo inks, their potential side effects and the initiatives being launched by regulating authorities to reduce the risks related to body art. Dermatologic Complications with Body Art

Body piercings, tattoos, and permanent make-up have become very popular as a fashion statement in recent decades. This book guides the reader through the world of body art. An overview is first provided of the history and epidemiology of tattoos and piercings. Subsequent chapters go on to examine in detail the materials and devices used in various forms of body art, and the techniques employed. All relevant risks and potential complications are clearly described with the aid of color illustrations. Special attention is paid to allergic reactions and the management of complications. The closing chapter examines the techniques and devices used for tattoo removal, with a particular focus on the use of different lasers.

The Letters of Saint Teresa of Jesus of the Andes

Teresa of Jesus of the Andes (Juanita Fernández Solar) became the first Chilean saint when she was canonized in 1993 by Pope St. John Paul II. In 1919, she entered the Discalced Carmelites of Los Andes at age eighteen and died only eleven months later. An inspiration to young people, she lived a vibrant social life amid school, sports, music, and friends, all the while being completely devoted to her faith. This volume, first published in 1994, contains the 164 letters of the saint translated by Father Michael Griffin, O.C.D. Despite her unusually brief life, Saint Teresa's collected letters have become a source of great spiritual enrichment and inspiration to many. They capture the saint's personality and share her major concerns, namely, her desire for union with God no matter the cost. Also included are a full chronology of her life and a thematic and explanatory introduction to the letters written by the translator. This book is a reprint of the 1994 edition by Teresian Charism Press.

Megacities are a new phenomenon in history. The fact that many of them are in emerging countries deepens the challenges of governing these spaces. Can these vast, complex entities, rife with inequalities and divisions, be governed effectively? For researchers, the answer has often been no. The approach developed in this work focuses on the material city and its institutions and shows that, without recourse to a big new theory, urban leaders have devised mechanisms of ordinary government. They have done so through the resolution of practical and essential problems: providing electricity, drinking water, sanitation, transportation. Three findings emerge from this book.
