A partir do estudo da micro-história, para compreender o todo, o autor nos apresenta o caso dos escravos alforriados na região da cidade de Porto Feliz (SP), entre o fim do século XVIII e meados do século XIX, quando pardos, negros libertos e seus descendentes precisavam criar relações sociais para que pudessem realmente se sentir inseridos e serem inseridos na sociedade da época. Dentro da ordem escravista brasileira, por vezes é difícil imaginar que os libertos, seus descendentes e também os pardos pudessem ter algum papel de proeminência. Alguns até conseguiram, mas nem sempre podemos dizer que isso era fato corrente. A maioria dos libertos perdeu-se pelo caminho.
