Hyperbolic Problems and Regularity Questions

This book discusses new challenges in the quickly developing field of hyperbolic problems. Particular emphasis lies on the interaction between nonlinear partial differential equations, functional analysis and applied analysis as well as mechanics. The book originates from a recent conference focusing on hyperbolic problems and regularity questions. It is intended for researchers in functional analysis, PDE, fluid dynamics and differential geometry.

Fundamental Directions in Mathematical Fluid Mechanics

This volume consists of six articles, each treating an important topic in the theory ofthe Navier-Stokes equations, at the research level. Some of the articles are mainly expository, putting together, in a unified setting, the results of recent research papers and conference lectures. Several other articles are devoted mainly to new results, but present them within a wider context and with a fuller exposition than is usual for journals. The plan to publish these articles as a book began with the lecture notes for the short courses of G.P. Galdi and R. Rannacher, given at the beginning of the International Workshop on Theoretical and Numerical Fluid Dynamics, held in Vancouver, Canada, July 27 to August 2, 1996. A renewed energy for this project came with the founding of the Journal of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics, by G.P. Galdi, J. Heywood, and R. Rannacher, in 1998. At that time it was decided that this volume should be published in association with the journal, and expanded to include articles by J. Heywood and W. Nagata, J. Heywood and M. Padula, and P. Gervasio, A. Quarteroni and F. Saleri. The original lecture notes were also revised and updated.

Recent Advances In Elliptic And Parabolic Problems, Proceedings Of The International Conference

The book is an account on recent advances in elliptic and parabolic problems and related equations, including general quasi-linear equations, variational structures, Bose-Einstein condensate, Chern-Simons model, geometric shell theory and stability in fluids. It presents very up-to-date research on central issues of these problems such as maximal regularity, bubbling, blowing-up, bifurcation of solutions and wave interaction. The contributors are well known leading mathematicians and prominent young researchers. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings® (ISTP® / ISI Proceedings)• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)• CC Proceedings — Engineering & Physical Sciences

Applied Nonlinear Analysis

This book is meant as a present to honor Professor on the th occasion of his 70 birthday. It collects refereed contributions from sixty-one mathematicians from eleven countries. They cover many different areas of research related to the work of Professor including Navier-Stokes equations, nonlinear elasticity, non-Newtonian fluids, regularity of solutions of parabolic and elliptic problems, operator theory and numerical methods. The realization of this book could not have been made possible without the generous support of Centro de Matemática Aplicada (CMA/IST) and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Special thanks are due to Dr. Ulrych for the careful preparation of the final version of this b...

Trends in Partial Differential Equations of Mathematical Physics

This book consists of contributions originating from a conference in Obedo, Portugal, which honoured the 70th birthday of V.A. Solonnikov. A broad variety of topics centering on nonlinear problems is presented, particularly Navier-Stokes equations, viscosity problems, diffusion-absorption equations, free boundaries, and Euler equations.

Nonlinear Problems in Mathematical Physics and Related Topics I

The new series, International Mathematical Series founded by Kluwer / Plenum Publishers and the Russian publisher, Tamara Rozhkovskaya is published simultaneously in English and in Russian and starts with two volumes dedicated to the famous Russian mathematician Professor Olga Aleksandrovna Ladyzhenskaya, on the occasion of her 80th birthday. O.A. Ladyzhenskaya graduated from the Moscow State University. But throughout her career she has been closely connected with St. Petersburg where she works at the V.A. Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Many generations of mathematicians have become familiar with the nonlinear theory of partial differential equations read...

Navier—Stokes Equations and Related Nonlinear Problems

This volume contains the Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Navier-Stokes Equations and Related Nonlinear Problems. The conference was held in Funchal (Madeira, Portugal), on May 21-27, 1994. In addition to the editor, the organizers were Carlos Albuquerque (FC, University of Lisbon), Casimiro Silva (University of Madeira) and Juha Videman (1ST, Technical University of Lisbon). This meeting, following two other successful events of similar type held in Thurnau (Germany) in 1992 and in Cento (Italy) in 1993, brought together, to the majestically beautiful island of Madeira, more than 60 specialists from all around the world, of which about two thirds were invited lecturers. ...

Theory Of The Navier-stokes Equations

This volume collects the articles presented at the Third International Conference on “The Navier-Stokes Equations: Theory and Numerical Methods”, held in Oberwolfach, Germany. The articles are important contributions to a wide variety of topics in the Navier-Stokes theory: general boundary conditions, flow exterior to an obstacle, conical boundary points, the controllability of solutions, compressible flow, non-Newtonian flow, magneto-hydrodynamics, thermal convection, the interaction of fluids with elastic solids, the regularity of solutions, and Rothe's method of approximation.

Mathematical modeling and numerical simulation in fluid mechanics are topics of great importance both in theory and technical applications. The present book attempts to describe the current status in various areas of research. The 10 chapters, mostly survey articles, are written by internationally renowned specialists and offer a range of approaches to and views of the essential questions and problems. In particular, the theories of incompressible and compressible Navier-Stokes equations are considered, as well as stability theory and numerical methods in fluid mechanics. Although the book is primarily written for researchers in the field, it will also serve as a valuable source of information to graduate students.
