Culture, Organization and Management in East Asia
Current management books and manuals make a popular topic out of doing business in China, and they operate on the assumption that Chinese business culture strongly contrasts Western. However, evidence suggests that tensions between value and market and community and individual are part of every market-entering society, while only the reactions differ. This new book raises questions about the ways personal relations are dealt with in China, specifically relations between Chinese and Western partners. Social relationships carry considerable weight in Chinese culture, with special emphasis on the role of social connections and rules of conduct. The chapters of this book analyse and assess the methods for harmonising business relations across cultures.

It aims to illustrate how Chinese society and its creative writing have supported, competed and fought with each other for the past 40 years and more. The strengths and weaknesses of these essays offer a window on those of modern Chinese literature itself. Care Work, Migrant Peasant Families and Discourse of Filial Piety in China
This book examines the experiences of migrant peasant workers in China who care for parents diagnosed with cancer and explores to what extent contextual changes after the economic reform initiated in 1978 affected practices and experiences of caring. In his own attempt to develop a localized methodology, the author considers identifying similarities between Chinese philosophies and Foucault’s theories as the key step for localizing Foucauldian discourse analysis. Three similarities are located and articulated with regard to filial care. Fr Laszlo Ladany, SJ, published only one book in his lifetime (The Communist Party of China and Marxism, 1921-1985: A Self-Portrait), but became widely known and respected as the doyen of 'China-watchers' through his editorship of China News Analysis in Hong Kong in 1953-82. On his death in 1990 he left this survey, simply expressed but revealing on every page the depth of his knowledge of the Chinese people and of Chinese and comparative legal history, one of his own earlier special subjects of study. His ultimate concern is to illustrate the antipathy of Mao Tse-tung to law, even in a form renewed according to Marxist doctrine, and to age-old customary Chinese concepts of acceptable behaviour: this created a mental and spiritual void in a whole generation of Chinese with possibly irreversible and certainly unpredictable consequences. The book is a deeply thought-provoking introduction to the study of Chinese history, politics and culture. Two distinguished German sinologists, Professor Jurgen Domes and Dr Marie-Luise Nath, have, between them, edited the work and provided short opening and concluding sections.
