Este livro propõe uma análise profunda dos filmes Fresa y Chocolate (1993) e Guantanamera (1995), ambos as duas únicas codireções da dupla Tomás Gutiérrez Alea e Juan Carlos Tabío, com o objetivo de compreender de que forma os diretores constroem as narrativas indissociavelmente como um reflexo e uma reflexão de e sobre Cuba. Para isso, a obra se debruça, para além dos filmes, sobre uma vasta quantidade de materiais, como livros, revistas, entrevistas, cartas, entre tantos outros, na tentativa de desvendar como as imagens são devolvidas, em um sentido filosófico, para os cubanos. Assim, a obra traz análises individuais de cada uma das obras que levam em consideração elementos intertextuais, contextuais, simbólicos e metafóricos e, também, uma análise comparativa, no intuito compreender melhor o que caracteriza o trabalho da codireção.
