The Last Stone

The true story of a cold case, a compulsive liar, and five determined detectives, from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author and “master journalist” (The Wall Street Journal). On March 29, 1975, sisters Katherine and Sheila Lyons, ages ten and twelve, vanished from a shopping mall in suburban Washington, DC As shock spread, then grief, a massive police effort found nothing. The investigation was shelved, and the mystery endured. Then, in 2013, a cold case squad detective found something he and a generation of detectives had missed. It pointed them toward a man named Lloyd Welch, then serving time for child molestation in Delaware. The acclaimed author of Black Hawk Down and Hue 1968...

A radical new translation of the New Testament Gospels of Mark and John, this book also includes the three Biblical letters written by John, the Elder, plus the first letter attributed to Peter, which, as Peter himself acknowledges in his postscript, was actually written by Silvanus. One of many innovations in this new translation, is that for the first time in 1,800 years, all Scripture references made by the evangelists have been traced back to the Greek Septuagint which they actually quoted, not the correct Hebrew text which most theologians think they should have used. Some of the differences are quite startling.

A few vocal futurists have publicly admitted that we are likely to destroy ourselves by the year 2050. Many more admit that, for the first time in human history, we cannot confidently predict the broad outlines of the human condition a mere 50 years from now. Here is a fascinating look at why many of today's scientists and futurists believe the end is near and how that should inform our Christian journey. Pointing out that secular and Christian observers can already see that we have entered the final season, this resource explores credible doomsday scenarios and compares those theories with the biblical indicators of the very last days. This is a call to live our lives with commitment and consistency in light of the end's reality and proximity.

The British BLACKHAWK DOWN: How a patrol from the Parachute Regiment fought its way to safety while six British military policemen were massacred. In 24 June 2003, six British military policemen were killed in the most horrific circumstances in Iraq. At the same time, and in the same town, a small patrol of the Parachute Regiment shot its way out of an Iraqi ambush. Mark Nicol investigates the controversial deaths of the Military Policemen, drawing on their own diaries and letters home, as well as eyewitness testimony from their Iraqi Police interpreters. At the same time, he tells the incredible story of how a hopelessly outnumbered patrol of Paras managed to escape the fury of the mob. The...

The Last Twelve Verses of Mark

A study of the authenticity and interpretation of the last twelve verses of St Mark's Gospel. These verses are omitted from at least one important manuscript tradition and queried in most modern translations (though not from the NEB). Professor Farmer traces the history of the text tradition for omission back to Egypt, and argues that one important factor contributing to their omission was the dangerous teaching they seemed to contain: they appear to encourage Christians to handle deadly snakes and drink poisons to prove their faith, a practice which has been revived today by some Christian sects who accept the scriptural authority of these verses. The teaching of these verses has, however, never become established in orthodox Christianity and indeed most Christians are unaware of their doctrinal significance. Professor Farmer reviews all the textual and patristic evidence and examines the most plausible solutions that have been canvassed. This is another substantial contribution to a series that has set the highest standards of scholarship in biblical and New Testament studies.
