Exploring the real life experiences of criminal justice professionals, this anthology is the first book to focus solely on the use of qualitative research in various components of the criminal justice system. An inside look at how police officers are trained to perpetuate state violence Michael Brown. Philando Castile. George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. As the names of those killed by the police became cemented into public memory, the American public took to the streets in unprecedented numbers to mourn, organize, and demand changes to the current system of policing. In response, police departments across the country committed themselves to change, pledging to hire more women and people of color, incorporate diversity training, and instruct officers to verbally de-escalate interactions with the public. These reform efforts tend to rely on a “bad apple” argument, focusing the nature and scope of th...

Thwarting Death

This book examines the lived experienes of death penalty defense lawyers and how they created a legal culture of resistance to the death penalty. It argues that an important social component of death penalty abolition in the state of Colorado was due to the efforts of capital defense attorneys. Specifically, it explores how the death penalty defense lawyers created and embraced a legal culture of resistance which compelled the attorneys to fight tenaciously in order to win life sentences for clients that had committed brutal homicides. A legal culture of resistance does not exist in a vacuum. Thwarting Death traces the lived experience of 15 death penalty defense lawyers from when they were kids all the way up through retirement to explain how a legal culture of resistance forms and lawyers operate within it after being established which in turn can have a massive influence on public policy outside of a courtroom; such as creating a social and political environment conducive to abolishing the death penalty.

"In February 2016, while testifying in a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, a Barack Obama appointee, promised that her department would act with independence in investigating Hillary Clinton's usage of a personal email server during her tenure as Secretary of State. During that hearing, Congressman John Carter (R-TX) asked Lynch: If the FBI makes the case that Hillary Clinton mishandled classified information and put America's security at risk, will you prosecute the case? . . .[P]lease look the American people in the eye and tell us what your position is as you are the chief prosecutor of the United States. In response to this questioning, Lynch...

The Management of Correctional Institutions

Section 1 (pages 1 to 68) presents an overview of the literature on prison management, and the results of a national survey of wardens which enquired into actual management styles, problem-solving techniques, and decision-making approaches. The national survey aimed to determine how much the literature reflected the wardens' management practices. Findings showed that corrections management largely reflects the literature in that it has inconsistencies, an emphasis on personnel experience, and an inward focus. These results were used to develop a perspective focusing on a humane and caring relationship between manager and staff. Section 2 (pages 72 to 301) contains abstracts of the 100 'most important works, both essay and research, on correctional institution management'.

Domestic drug enforcement takes many forms, from the rural patrol officer who happens upon a small-scale mobile Òshake and bakeÓ methamphetamine lab during a routine traffic stop, to the city narcotics detective who initiates a low-level buy-bust operation that nets a few hits of crack cocaine on the street corner, to the local, state, and federal agents working in multiagency task forces that coordinate a sting operation that nets thousands of kilos of near-pure cocaine being transported by tractor-trailer. Regardless of the form, there is a high probability that these authorities have exploited access to known offenders and exerted pressure on those individuals to gather inside informati...
