The books (LNCS 6643 and 6644) constitute the refereed proceedings of the 8th European Semantic Web Conference, ESWC 2011, held in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, in May/June 2011. The 57 revised full papers of the research track presented together with 7 PhD symposium papers and 14 demo papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 291 submissions. Contrastiveness in Information Structure, Alternatives and Scalar Implicatures
A group of authors containing both leading authorities and young researchers addresses a number of issues of contrastiveness, polarity items and exhaustivity, quantificational expressions and the implicatures they generate, and the interaction between semantic operators and speech acts. The 19 contributions provide insights on the interplay between semantics and pragmatics. The volume’s reach is cross-linguistic and takes an unorthodox multi-paradigm approach. Languages studied range from European languages including Hungarian and Russian to East Asian languages such as Japanese and Korean, with rich data on focus and discourse particles. This edited collection sheds light on Nordic families’ strategies and methods for transferring significant cultural heritage to the next generation over centuries. Contributors explore why certain values, attitudes, knowledge, and patterns were selected while others were left behind, and show how these decisions served and secured families’ well-being and values. Covering a time span ranging from the early modern era to the end of the twentieth century, the book combines the innovative "history from below" approach with a broad variety of families and new kinds of source material to open up new perspectives on the history of education and upbringing.
