This volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Recent Advances in PDEs and Applications, in honor of Hugo Beirão da Veiga's 70th birthday, held from February 17–21, 2014, in Levico Terme, Italy. The conference brought together leading experts and researchers in nonlinear partial differential equations to promote research and to stimulate interactions among the participants. The workshop program testified to the wide-ranging influence of Hugo Beirão da Veiga on the field of partial differential equations, in particular those related to fluid dynamics. In his own work, da Veiga has been a seminal influence in many important areas: Navier-Stokes equations, Stokes systems, non-Newtonian fluids, Euler equations, regularity of solutions, perturbation theory, vorticity phenomena, and nonlinear potential theory, as well as various degenerate or singular models in mathematical physics. This same breadth is reflected in the mathematical papers included in this volume.
This volume developed from a Workshop on Natural Locomotion in Fluids and on Surfaces: Swimming, Flying, and Sliding which was held at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) at the University of Minnesota, from June 1-5, 2010. The subject matter ranged widely from observational data to theoretical mechanics, and reflected the broad scope of the workshop. In both the prepared presentations and in the informal discussions, the workshop engaged exchanges across disciplines and invited a lively interaction between modelers and observers. The articles in this volume were invited and fully refereed. They provide a representative if necessarily incomplete account of the field of natural locomotion during a period of rapid growth and expansion. The papers presented at the workshop, and the contributions to the present volume, can be roughly divided into those pertaining to swimming on the scale of marine organisms, swimming of microorganisms at low Reynolds numbers, animal flight, and sliding and other related examples of locomotion.

This book in the BCAM SpringerBriefs series is a treatise on the p-Laplace equation. It is based on lectures by the author that were originally delivered at the Summer School in Jyväskylä, Finland, in August 2005 and have since been updated and extended to cover various new topics, including viscosity solutions and asymptotic mean values. The p-Laplace equation is a far-reaching generalization of the ordinary Laplace equation, but it is non-linear and degenerate (p>2) or singular (p2). Thus it requires advanced methods. Many fascinating properties of the Laplace equation are, in some modified version, extended to the p-Laplace equation. Many engineering, operations, and scientific applications include a mixture of discrete and continuous decision variables and nonlinear relationships involving the decision variables that have a pronounced effect on the set of feasible and optimal solutions. Mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems combine the numerical difficulties of handling nonlinear functions with the challenge of optimizing in the context of nonconvex functions and discrete variables. MINLP is one of the most flexible modeling paradigms available for optimization; but because its scope is so broad, in the most general cases it is hopelessly intractable. Nonetheless, an expanding body of researchers and practitioners — including chemical engineers, operations researchers, industrial engineers, mechanical engineers, economists, statisticians, computer scientists, operations managers, and mathematical programmers — are interested in solving large-scale MINLP instances.
This book examines the exciting interface between differential geometry and continuum mechanics, now recognised as being of increasing technological significance. Topics discussed include isometric embeddings in differential geometry and the relation with microstructure in nonlinear elasticity, the use of manifolds in the description of microstructure in continuum mechanics, experimental measurement of microstructure, defects, dislocations, surface energies, and nematic liquid crystals. Compensated compactness in partial differential equations is also treated. The volume is intended for specialists and non-specialists in pure and applied geometry, continuum mechanics, theoretical physics, materials and engineering sciences, and partial differential equations.
