"There is real personal danger for anthropologists who dare to speak and write against terror; by doing so, they potentially and sometimes actually bring the terror down on themselves."—Jeffrey A. Sluka, from the Introduction Death Squad is the first work to focus specifically on the anthropology of state terror. It brings together an international group of anthropologists who have done extensive research in areas marked by extreme forms of state violence and who have studied state terror from the perspective of victims and survivors. The book presents eight case studies from seven countries—Spain, India (Punjab and Kashmir), Argentina, Guatemala, Northern Ireland, Indonesia, and the Phi...
Winner of the 1991 Chicago Women in Publishing Award In a restaurant in Estelí, Nicaragua, Dianne Walta Hart, a visiting American scholar, and Marta Lopez, member of a Nicaraguan women's organization, began to talk of the Sandinista revolution and of the changes it had brought, especially for women. Their conversation was to continue at intervals over the next four years; it expanded to include Marta's mother, Doña María, her sister, Leticia, and her brother, Omar, a Sandinista soldier. From these conversations has come the powerful and moving oral history of a Nicaraguan family in the twentieth century: a testimonial by ordinary people caught up in civil strife and living in a country devastated by war and inflation. Laying bare the inner workings of the Lopez family, Dianne Walta Hart evokes a picture of a close-knit and loving family. Tracing their story from the years of repression and guerrilla activity under Somoza through an era of personal and political revolution in the 1970s and 1980s, she shows people persevering against every kind of adversity.
Experiencing both the enormous benefits and the serious detriments of globalization and economic restructuring, Southern California serves as a magnet for immigrants from many parts of the world. This volume advances an emerging body of work that centers this region's future on the links between the two fastest-growing racial groups in California, Asians and Latinos, and the economic and social mainstream of this important sector of the global economy. The contributors to the anthology—scholars and community leaders with social science, urban planning, and legal backgrounds—provide a multi-faceted analysis of gender, class, and race relations. They also examine various forms of immigrant economic participation, from low-wage workers to entrepreneurs and capital investors. Asian and Latino Immigrants in a Restructuring Economy documents the entrenchment of various immigrant communities in the socio-political and economic fabric of United States society and these communities' role in transforming the Los Angeles region.

A question raised by many individuals today – “How Safe is Our Food Consumed Today?” Food safety has become a hot topic and an important public issue due to the increasingly widespread nature of foodborne illnesses in both developed and developing countries. As food is biological in nature and supplies consumers with nutrients, it is also equally capable of supporting the growth of microorganisms from the environmental sources. A precise method of monitoring and detecting of foodborne pathogens including Salmonella sp., Vibrio sp., Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter and Norovirus is needed to prevent and control human foodborne infections. Clinical treatments of infection caused by ...

Mexican cinema has largely been overlooked by international film scholars because of a lack of English-language information and the fact that Spanish-language information was difficult to find and often out of date. This comprehensive filmography helps fill the need. Arranged by year of release and then by title, the filmography contains entries that include basic information (film and translated title, production company, genre, director, cast), a plot summary, and additional information about the film. Inclusion criteria: a film must be a Mexican production or co-production, feature length (one hour or more, silent films excepted), fictional (documentaries and compilation films are not included unless the topic relates to Mexican cinema; some docudramas and films with recreated or staged scenes are included), and theatrically released or intended for theatrical release.
