Excitement, uncertainty, and fear predicated the shaping of a new order, the outcome of which was anything but predetermined. Recent studies have focused on the ambivalent impact of capitalism. Yet, at the time, parliamentary democracy had equally few traditions to return to, and membership in the European Union was a distant dream at best. Nowadays, as new threats arise, Europe’s current political crises prompt us to reconsider how liberal democracy in Eastern Europe came about in the first place. Monografie Budovat ráj – Bourat peklo zkoumá obrazy diktatur dvacátého století projevující se v dílech fantastické literatury, která do jisté míry stále ještě stojí na okraji vědeckého bádání. Zaměřuje se především na odrazy komunistické ideologie v dystopické a utopické literatuře, zároveň na předobraz komunistické ideologie ve starší utopické literatuře, a také na reflexi nacistické ideologie v literatuře dieselpunkové.Autor bádá o kontinuitě utopického a dystopického psaní od barokní literatury po současnost, přičemž utopie uvažuje zejména (avšak nejen) v jejich propagandistické variantě zaměřené na dobývání vesmíru, v dystopiích se ptá po otázce kolektivní i osobní identity a v případě dieselpunku hledá nejen samou podstatu žánru, ale také jeho projevy v české a evropské literatuře, stejně jako spojení s totalitarismem.
