Stranger In My Heart

Stranger In My Heart is about the search for understanding oneself, answering the question “Who am I?” by seeking to understand the currents that sweep down the generations, eddy through one’s own persona and continue on – palpable but often unrecognised. My father fought at the Battle of Hong Kong in December 1941, was taken prisoner by the Japanese and then escaped in February 1942, making his way across 1200 miles of inhospitable country to reach China’s wartime capital at Chongqing. Seventy years later I retraced his steps in an effort to understand a man who had died when I was 18, leaving a lot of unanswered questions behind. My book is the quest that I undertook to explore m...

While the Women Only Wept

In While the Women Only Wept Janice Potter-MacKinnon traces the story of Loyalist women from their experiences in the American colonies as antagonism toward the British Crown increased, through their forced exodus from the colonies in the late 1770s and early 1780s, to their eventual settlement in eastern Ontario in the area around present-day Kingston.

Here is a thorough critical re-examination of the Edwardian master of the darkly humorous short story, Saki (the pen name of Hector Hugh Munro, 1870-1916). Saki the satirist constantly rebelled against but depended upon the world of H.H. Munro, the gentleman bachelor. In reassessing the importance of post-Wilde sexuality, anti-suffragist feelings, and attitudes towards Jews and Slavs in Saki's oeuvre, it becomes clear that the fiction of Saki reflects a fervid imperial masculinity in Britain as World War I approached. The tension between rebellious sexual politics and pro-patriarchy, nationalist views in Saki's fiction reflects a time when the old, manly, bourgeois traditions of coming home from work to "the angel of the hearth" and defending King and Country abroad increasingly clashed with new sexual identities, women's agitation for the vote, and the growing presence of non-British Others in the public imagination.

It is commonly stated history is written by the victor. The American Revolution is no exception. As a result of the American triumph in the War for Independence, loyalists historically have been placed in a negative light. In countless works and popular culture, loyalists have been portrayed as corrupt, inept, greedy people whose blind faith to the British crown led to their downfall. However, such a blind and erroneous stereotype only undermines and trivializes the struggles of the American loyalist. Regardless of their economic or social background, native born whites, immigrants, slaves, freemen and Native Americans banded together in support of King George and the British government. This is the story of the men, women and children from New York and the Hampshire Grants who chose to remain faithful to the Crown and fought as part of McAlpin's Corps of American Volunteers.
