In an age of upheaval and challenged faith, traditional heroes are hard to come by, and harder still to love, with their bloodstained hands and backs unbowed by the consequences of their actions. Through penetrating readings of key works of modern European literature, Victor Brombert shows how a new kind of hero—the antihero—has arisen to replace the toppled heroic model. Though they fail, by design, to live up to conventional expectations of mythic heroes, antiheroes are not necessarily "failures." They display different kinds of courage more in tune with our time and our needs: deficiency translated into strength, failure experienced as honesty, dignity achieved through humiliation. Brombert explores these paradoxes in the works of Büchner, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Flaubert, Svevo, Hašek, Frisch, Camus, and Levi. Primo Levi has been identified in the public mind as the supreme witness to the barbarism that was the Nazi Holocaust but he was ambivalent about having that role thrust upon him. He also wished to be judged as a writer who, in addition to the autobiographical works on his experiences in the death camps, wrote poetry, produced volumes of sci-fi stories, authored novels and contributed critical essays to newspapers on a range of topics and writers. No one has the right to ignore or downplay the 'testimony' Primo Levi offered, but it is time to examine the wider vision inherent in his work and to explore the tradition in which he operated. Levi was one of the great wisdom writers of his age, whose ethical authority, somewhat to his own embarrassment, was accepted in many fields. Several contributors to this collection of essays see him as a proponent of Enlightenment values, or as heir to a longer Humanist tradition. Even after enduring Auschwitz, he held fast to a notion of the dignity of the human person, and no man did more to re-establish, however quizzically, the secular basis for such beliefs. His overall standing as writer is the subject of this book.

The publication Made in Italy analyses history, dynamics and future in Italian design through four aspects: aesthetics, economy, communication and project. About the first three aspects, there are contributions by Laura Biagiotti, Massimo d'Alessandro, Philippe Daverio, Peppino Ortoleva, Vanni Pasca, Andrea Piersanti, Alberto Pratesi and Maurizio Stecco. Three generations of Italian design witnesses are collected in the third section and are signed by great designers: Mario Bellini, Andrea Branzi, Carlo Colombo, Stefano Giovannoni, Enzo Mari and Alessandro Mendini. Their texts are accompanied by product images elicited by their recent Made in Italy production. The final section is formed by a wide range of Made in Italy historic images and products, chronologically ordered from 1950 to 1990.
