The photodynamic technique involves the administration of a photosensitizer followed by application of laser light. When light interacts intracellularly with the photosensitizer, the photon energy absorbed by the sensitizing molecule mainly generates photooxidation for tissue destruction or fluorescence for diagnostics. Photodynamic Therapy with ALA
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is increasingly being used amongst health practitioners in combating a variety of diseases. One common strategy used during this light activated process is to induce the accumulation of significant amounts of a photosensitising agent in the diseased tissue. The naturally occurring amino acid 5-aminovulinic acid (ALA) is used to produce high levels of the photosensitizer, Protoprophyin IX, in the therapy known as ALA-PDT. Pathology and Genetics of Tumours of the Breast and Female Genital Organs
This is the 5th volume in a WHO series on histological and genetic typing of human tumours. This edition focuses on cancers of the breast and female genital organs, and describes diagnostic criteria, pathological features, associated genetic alterations and gene expression patterns in a disease-oriented manner. Sections on all recognised neoplasms and their variants include new ICD-O codes, incidence, age and sex distribution, location, clinical signs and symptoms, pathology, genetics and predictive factors. It contains colour photographs, X-rays, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) images, charts and over 3,200 references. The classifications presented reflect the views of WHO working group conferences held in France in January and March 2002, and the volume was produced in collaboration with the International Academy of Pathology.
Minimally Invasive Breast Biopsies
Modern imaging methods have made it possible to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage than in the past. Nevertheless, a large majority of suspicious findings at screening subsequently prove to be benign. It is therefore important to be able to identify benign lesions in a manner that is reliable, tissue sparing, patient friendly, and cost-effective. More than 70% of breast biopsies can now be performed using minimally invasive procedures that meet these criteria. This book examines in detail vacuum-assisted minimally invasive breast biopsy systems (ATEC, EnCor, Intact, Mammotome and Vacora), stereotactic systems, MRI-guided procedures, and ductoscopy. Further chapters are devoted to the pathology of the breast tissue obtained using these procedures, their limitations, the implications of recent advances in breast imaging, and the results of cost-benefit analyses. The closing chapter provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of recent data.
