This book shares the stories of 65 Gohman ancestors who grew up next to the Mississippi River in Central Minnesota. They are the third-generation members of the Gohman family that immigrated from Lower Saxony, Germany, to the United States in 1843 and migrated from Cincinnati to Minnesota in 1855. The first and second generations are introduced briefly. The lives of the Third-Generation spanned a period from 1868 to 1991, an amazing 123 years. Generally engaged as farmers, they were diverse personalities who responded to life experiences in diverse ways. They lived through times of both great prosperity and deep poverty. They experienced two world wars and dramatically changing technology. This generation of the Gohman family thrived as they adapted to the changes in their lives from the horse and buggy times to the days of the jet plane.

Dr. Cloyd Ovid Trouth’s book, Times are Changing and the Struggle Continues, provides a unique perspective on his life. In addition, it gives a balanced viewpoint of some of the cultural and societal issues that have occurred and continue to plague the United States and the world. Among other issues, Dr. Trouth describes and analyzes, through his memoir, racial inequality, poverty, the long-lasting effects of slavery, and man’s inhumanity to man. He writes engagingly and with sharp wit about the problems that, for example, African-Americans in the United States still face. Everyone can learn something through Dr. Trouth’s story of his own life, which gives a complex historical viewpoint on the United States as well.

Coherent Control in Atoms, Molecules, and Semiconductors

The International Workshop on Coherent Control of Carrier Dynamics in Semiconductors was held May 19 to 22, 1998 at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Its intent was to bring together an international and interdisciplinary group of scientists to discuss recent progress, pertinent problems, and open questions in the field of coherent control in atoms, molecules, and semiconductors, in particular. Twenty-seven scientists from the physical chemistry, quantum optics, semiconductor, electrical engineering, and laser communities accepted our invitation and made this event a meeting of exciting presentations and vivid discussions. This volume contains the proceedings of this workshop. Most spea...

Quantum Devices And Circuits, Proceedings Of The International Conference

The conference will cover various aspects of the science and engineering of devices, circuits and systems that exploit mesoscopic or quantum-mechanical phenomena in their operation. This conference will be the first to bring together experts from the device and circuits fields. It is intended to promote interaction between physicists, molecular chemists, engineers and computer scientists who all have a role to play in the development of the next generation of electronics.

Quantum Transport in Ultrasmall Devices

The operation of semiconductor devices depends upon the use of electrical potential barriers (such as gate depletion) in controlling the carrier densities (electrons and holes) and their transport. Although a successful device design is quite complicated and involves many aspects, the device engineering is mostly to devise a "best" device design by defIning optimal device structures and manipulating impurity profIles to obtain optimal control of the carrier flow through the device. This becomes increasingly diffIcult as the device scale becomes smaller and smaller. Since the introduction of integrated circuits, the number of individual transistors on a single chip has doubled approximately e...
