Labov: A Guide for the Perplexed
William Labov (b. 1927) has been a driving force in linguistics for over four decades. Throughout North America, and in much of the rest of the world, his name is synonymous with sociolinguistics. This new Guide for the Perplexed summarizes Labov's work in a number of subfields, including historical linguistics, discourse analysis and not least sociolinguistics. It also sketches a broader context for appreciating Labov's major innovations. His considerable and growing legacy is discussed with comparative glances to other ways of approaching language within linguistics and in neighboring disciplines. Since the publication of The Social Stratification of English in New York City in 1966, Labov has pushed the boundaries of sociolinguistics decade after decade but there has been no one volume guide to his work. This book presents a sociolinguistic study of the Northern Cities Shift, a complex pattern of vowel changes heard across the traditional Inland North dialect region of the United States. The study reports on how residents of small towns are reacting to these changes, which are associated with urban speech. Utilizing both quantitative and qualitative evidence, the author offers a richly detailed account of the sociolinguistic distribution of the changes in the communities investigated. Paul and Pseudepigraphy
In Paul and Pseudepigraphy, an international group of scholars engage open questions in the study of the Apostle Paul and those documents often deemed pseudepigraphal. This volume addresses many traditional questions, including those of method and the authenticity of several canonical Pauline letters, but they also reflect a desire to think in new ways about persistent questions surrounding pseudepigraphy. The focus on pseudepigraphy in relationship to Paul affords a unique opportunity to address this innovative inclination, not readily available in studies of New Testament pseudepigraphy in general. Regarding these concerns, new approaches are introduced, traditional evidence is reassessed, and some new suggestions are offered. In addition to Pauline letters, treatments of related non-canonical Pauline pseudepigraphs are included in discussion.
Labov, William
William Labov is an American linguist who taught at the University of Pennsylvania from 1971 until his retirement in 2014. His expertise lies in the area of sociolinguistics, and thus he generally explores the relationship between language and society. His research is the foundation of the field of variationist sociolinguistics, which uses quantitative methods to uncover patterns in how people alter their language across discourse situations and how variation in linguistic forms correlates with social factors such as gender, age, and socioeconomic status.
