Celui-ci a été présent tout au long de son histoire, sans jamais s’accrocher à une relation ou des événements de premier plan : insistant mais insaisissable, ne cessant de resurgir après des éclipses, comme un cours d’eau souterrain ou un indice dans une intrigue dont on ignore la clé. L’enquête conduit le livre à s’attarder devant les grandes toiles consacrées à saint Matthieu par Caravage, à traverser l’immense Passion selon saint Matthieu de Bach, à méditer sur L’Évangile selon saint Matthieu de Pasolini, puis à laisser vibrer les résonances du récit biblique, avant de revenir, comme sur le dessin d’un fer à cheval, vers Pasolini, puis Bach, puis à nouveau Caravage. Le tracé de cette piste donne forme à un essai insolite, où la quête autobiographique se nourrit de pensées esthétiques et théologiques, qu’en retour elle éclaire d’un jour inattendu.
