In the twelfth issue of The Shakespearean International Yearbook, a Special Section in eight essays explores India's intense engagement with Shakespeare, the longest of any country outside the Western world. Treating cinema, theater and education in particular, contributors examine how Shakespearean traffic has been routed through many languages and cultural contexts across the subcontinent, from the early nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Introducing a new Yearbook feature, this volume also presents two review essays; the essay topics are 'New Biography Studies, Queer Turns in Theory, and Shakespearean Utility,' and 'Textual Studies, Performance Criticism, and Digital Humanities'. Gao Xingjian's Idea of Theatre
This book argues that Gao Xingjian's Idea of Theatre can only be explained by his broad knowledge and use of various Chinese and Western theatrical, literary, artistic and philosophical traditions. The author aims to show how Gao's theories of the theatre of anti-illusion, theatre of conscious convention, of the "poor theatre" and total theatre, of the neutral actor and the actor - jester - storyteller are derived from the Far Eastern tradition, and to what extent they have been inspired by 20th century Euro-American reformers of theatre such as Antonin Artaud, Bertolt Brecht, Vsevolod Meyerhold, Jerzy Grotowski and Tadeusz Kantor. Although Gao' s plays and theatre form the major subject, this volume also pays ample attention to his painting and passion for music as sources of his dramaturgical strategies.

Boundaries of Violence in Early Modern England
This book explores the possibilities and limitations of violence on the Early Modern stage and in the Early Modern world. This collection is divided into three sections: History-cal Violence, (Un)Comic Violence, and Revenge Violence. This division allows scholars to easily find intertextual materials; comic violence may function similarly across multiple comedies but is vastly different from most tragic violence. While the source texts move beyond Shakespeare, this book follows the classic division of Shakespeare’s plays into history, comedy, and tragedy. Each section of the book contains one chapter engaging with modern dramatic practice along with several that take textual or historical approaches.
